LORMAN, Miss. — The calm that usually envelopes the Alcorn State University campus was shattered Friday evening, October 11, when gunfire erupted near the Industrial Technology Building at approximately 6:30 p.m. A 29-year-old woman, later identified as Brekyra Fisher, was fatally wounded, and two others remain hospitalized with serious injuries.

Sheriff Edward Goods of Claiborne County confirmed that Fisher was from Vicksburg and that her family has been notified.   With the assistance of the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and Alcorn State University Police, the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office is leading a full-scale investigation. As of now, no arrests have been made, and authorities have not released a suspect description.

Preliminary evidence suggests the shooting stemmed from an altercation near the Industrial Technology Building. Investigators are still working to determine whether any of the victims or potential suspects were students at Alcorn State. Sheriff Goods has emphasized that the investigation remains open and that all efforts are underway to hold those responsible accountable. He also noted that, based on what’s known so far, the event appears to be isolated, and there is no confirmed ongoing threat to the campus community.

In response to the tragedy, Alcorn State University administration released a statement expressing deep sorrow and solidarity with those affected: “We are heartbroken by the loss of life that occurred on our campus. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those affected, and we are committed to supporting our students, faculty, and staff through this difficult time.” Campus counseling services have been made available to help students and staff process this event. In coordination with law enforcement, the university advised people on campus to shelter in place until the scene was cleared.

News of Fisher’s death spread quickly, and tributes have poured in from friends, acquaintances, and community members who remember her as compassionate, determined, and full of life. The Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward—tips may be submitted anonymously through Mississippi Crime Stoppers.

As investigators comb the crime scene and follow leads, Alcorn State and surrounding communities are watching closely and demanding answers. For now, fear mingles with grief—students return to class under a heavier shadow, yearning for justice and a return to safety.
