MOSHEIM, Tenn. – A quiet Monday morning in Greene County turned tragic when a wreck on West Andrew Johnson Highway claimed the life of a former school teacher. The victim, identified as Lisa D. Coffey of Greeneville, died at the crash scene in Mosheim shortly after 7:10 a.m., after her vehicle collided with a slowed semi.
According to the Mosheim Police Department, officers were dispatched to the scene near Turning Hill Road following reports of a serious collision involving entrapment. First responders found that Coffey’s Toyota RAV4 had struck the rear of a semitrailer that had decelerated while yielding to another vehicle turning ahead of it. Authorities said no skid marks were present, suggesting Coffey did not attempt braking before impact. (WGRV)

Investigators believe that distraction and excessive speed likely played central roles in the collision. The preliminary crash report states: “It is believed that the victim was distracted and when she gained her attention to the highway, there was not any room for correction to avoid the collision.” In other words, by the time she realized what was happening, it was already too late.
Friends and community members who knew Coffey confirmed that she had taught in the Greene County school system before and was well regarded by students and parents alike. The sudden loss has rippled across the county’s educational community, leaving many in shock and grieving. (WGRV)
Emergency crews labored at the site to free her vehicle, but Coffey was pronounced dead before she could be moved. Authorities have said that while the semi driver is cooperating, the investigation is ongoing and no additional charges or conclusions have been announced.
Officials are using this tragedy as a solemn reminder to drivers: a single moment of inattention can alter lives forever. Greene County law enforcement urges motorists to maintain vigilance, obey speed limits, and avoid distractions behind the wheel.
As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of someone who devoted her life to educating others—and prays that no family has to endure a similar heartbreak.
