In the pre-dawn darkness of Tuesday, October 14, a heartbreaking act of violence tore apart a young woman’s life in North St. Louis. Around 2:25 a.m., first responders were alerted that a woman suffering from a gunshot wound had been dropped off at a hospital. Despite frantic efforts to save her, she was declared dead just moments later.
Investigators say the shooting took place near North Broadway and East Clarence Avenue, in St. Louis’s Sixth District. That’s where 29-year-old Trinity Staten, who’d just climbed into a rideshare car, was struck by gunfire. The driver, uninjured but terrified, sped her to the hospital in a desperate attempt to keep her alive.

Police quickly zeroed in on a suspect: 31-year-old Jeremie Northcross, identified as her boyfriend. According to charging documents, Northcross circled the rideshare vehicle on a bicycle, then fired into it. After being arrested at the scene, he allegedly confessed to shooting at the car. A gun was reportedly found in his possession.
St. Louis authorities have charged Northcross with First-Degree Murder and Armed Criminal Action, agreeing with detectives who believe the shooting was domestic related. Though motive details remain murky, the case is being handled by the city’s Homicide Division, with detectives urging anyone with information to come forward.
Community reaction has been shocked and sorrowful. One rideshare driver shared he purposely avoids picking up passengers in parts of North St. Louis after dark. Others warned that such tragedies underscore how vulnerable both passengers and drivers can be—even when doing something as routine as hailing a ride.
As the investigation continues, police are asking that tips be sent to detectives at 314-444-5371. Those who wish to stay anonymous can reach out to CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS, where tips leading to felony arrests may be eligible for a reward.
Trinity Staten’s life was cut short in a moment meant to be mundane. Yet in that final ride, the violence that followed speaks to deeper fears — of heartbreak, of trust shattered, and of the fragility we all face when we step into a car at night.
