Young driver’s passing attempt ends in tragedy on U.S. 77: woman of Marietta loses life in head-on crash

Posted on October 20, 2025 by Usainsightreport

A quiet Sunday evening turned devastating north of Thackerville, Oklahoma, when a three-vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 77 claimed the life of 34-year-old Sydney Frosch of Marietta and left two others hospitalized. The wreck happened just after 8 p.m. on Oct. 19, as night was falling and traffic on the two-lane highway was thinning.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP), 23-year-old Kyra Shelton was traveling northbound when she attempted to pass a semi-truck. During that maneuver, her vehicle collided head-on with the southbound car driven by Frosch. The impact scattered debris across the road and left both vehicles heavily damaged.

Though first responders arrived quickly and worked under difficult conditions, Sydney Frosch unfortunately succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The passenger in Frosch’s vehicle survived and was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries described as non-lifethreatening. Shelton was also hospitalized for treatment; the semi-truck driver managed to escape without injury.

The crash forced the temporary closure of both lanes of U.S. 77 near Ullman Road as investigators documented the scene and removed wrecked vehicles. The roadway reopened later that night after several hours of work.

At this stage, investigators say the cause of the crash is still under review — they are looking into whether speed, visibility or other factors played a role, and say there are no immediate signs of impairment. Local residents mention that this part of the highway, because of its narrow lanes and limited sightlines, has long been considered risky for passing traffic.

In the aftermath, the Love County Sheriff’s Office offered condolences to the families affected and commended the swift response of the Thackerville Volunteer Fire Department and emergency medical crews. Community members from Marietta remember Sydney Frosch as a warm-hearted and generous person whose absence will be deeply felt.

As the investigation continues, the OHP is stressing a somber reminder: even on familiar roads, a single decision to pass at the wrong moment can alter lives forever. No charges have been filed yet — and once the probe is complete, findings will be forwarded to the district attorney’s office for review.
