EAST LANSING, MICHIGAN — 32-Year-Old Woman Found Dead in Red Cedar River

EAST LANSING, MICHIGAN — The East Lansing community is mourning the tragic loss of a 32-year-old woman, whose life was tragically cut short after her body was discovered in the Red Cedar River last week. Authorities confirmed her identity on October 20, 2025, following an investigation led by the East Lansing Police Department (ELPD).

According to the ELPD, officers responded to reports of a possible drowning after a passerby spotted a body in the river near the south bank of the Red Cedar River, close to the Michigan State University campus. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the woman was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Officials identified the victim as a doctoral candidate from Canada, who had been pursuing her Ph.D. at Michigan State University. Friends and colleagues described her as bright, compassionate, and dedicated to her research, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew her.

Police said that there were no signs of foul play at the scene, but authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding her death. ELPD officials stated that all evidence, including nearby surveillance footage and witness statements, is being carefully reviewed.

Witnesses reported seeing emergency vehicles along the riverbank early in the morning, with police officers cordoning off the area as investigators examined the scene. The river, a well-frequented area by students and residents, has since been temporarily restricted to ensure the investigation could proceed safely.

Family and friends expressed profound grief over the loss, describing her as a talented and inspiring scholar whose commitment to her studies and research was matched only by her kindness and generosity. Many recalled her infectious enthusiasm for learning and her supportive nature toward fellow students and colleagues.

The Michigan State University community released a statement offering condolences to the family and loved ones, emphasizing that counseling and support services were available to students, faculty, and staff affected by the tragic loss. The university described her as a valued member of its academic community.

Authorities have asked anyone with information that could help clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident to come forward. Witnesses who may have been near the river or noticed unusual activity are encouraged to contact ELPD, with tips able to be submitted anonymously if preferred.

Neighbors and local residents have begun leaving flowers, notes, and tokens near the river as a tribute to the young woman, while online memorials and social media messages have poured in from friends, classmates, and colleagues. The community has come together to honor her memory and impact on those around her.

As the investigation continues, police and university officials have urged the public to remain patient and allow authorities to thoroughly examine the circumstances. The tragic death serves as a sobering reminder of life’s fragility, while the community focuses on mourning and celebrating the life of a young scholar who touched so many lives in her brief time on Earth.
