Canisteo Mourns Derrick Smith and Gavin Odell in Tragic Vehicle Crash

In the town of Wellsville, Allegany County, New York, the community is grappling with an immense loss following the tragic passing of two young men: Derrick J. Smith, age 17, and Gavin Odell, age 18 — both residents of nearby Canisteo. The heartbreaking incident occurred early Saturday morning when a 2020 Buick Encore, carrying six teenagers, went off the road on Tarantine Boulevard and struck a utility pole on a sharp curve.

The crash happened around 2:24 a.m., prompting a swift response from New York State Police and local emergency units. According to early reports, the SUV veered off the north shoulder of the road and collided with a utility pole, impacting on the driver’s side. Inside the vehicle were six teenage occupants: the 17-year-old driver, a 14-year-old front passenger, two backseat passengers aged 15 and 16, and the two young men who tragically passed — Derrick and Gavin.

Derrick Smith, 17, was riding in the tailgate area of the vehicle and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Gavin Odell, 18, who was seated behind the driver, also passed away at the scene from his injuries. Four other occupants sustained minor injuries and were transported to Jones Memorial Hospital for evaluation and treatment.

Authorities have confirmed there were no signs of impairment at the time of the crash. However, an investigation remains ongoing to determine factors such as speed, visibility, and vehicle handling. Both young men’s remains were taken for autopsy as investigators work to understand the full scope of what happened that early morning.

The loss of Derrick and Gavin has sent waves of grief through Canisteo, a small, close-knit community where nearly everyone knows each other. Teachers, classmates, coaches, and neighbors have shared emotional tributes, describing the boys as bright, respectful, and full of potential. Gavin Odell, 18, was a standout athlete at his high school, playing on the varsity football and basketball teams, admired for his leadership and positivity. Derrick Smith, 17, was known for his warm heart, love for the outdoors, and dedication to his friends and family. He was said to have had an easygoing nature and a smile that could light up a room.

Community members have since gathered at Canisteo-Greenwood High School to offer comfort and support to the grieving families. Vigils are being organized, with candles, flowers, and handwritten notes placed near the school and at the crash site. Students have been encouraged to speak with grief counselors as the district works to provide emotional support to those struggling with the sudden loss of two beloved young lives.

First responders who were at the scene described the crash as one of the most heartbreaking incidents in recent memory. Officials expressed condolences to the families, emphasizing how deeply the tragedy has affected even seasoned emergency personnel. They also reminded the public of the importance of seatbelt safety, especially among teen drivers, and the potential consequences of even brief moments of distraction on the road.

Local authorities continue to investigate, asking residents for any surveillance or dash-cam footage that may shed light on the vehicle’s movements prior to the crash.

As Canisteo mourns, the families of Derrick and Gavin have asked for privacy while they process their grief. Friends have set up online memorial pages and community fundraisers to assist with funeral costs, reflecting the unity and compassion that define small-town life.

Though their time on Earth was far too short, Derrick Smith and Gavin Odell leave behind legacies of friendship, laughter, and love. Their absence is felt deeply, not only by their families but by everyone who had the privilege of knowing them. The community of Canisteo will remember them as two young men whose spirits continue to shine brightly — gone too soon, but forever in their hearts.
