Shot in the road: 31-year-old killed, friend wounded in Birmingham night attack

Posted on November 10, 2025 by Usainsightreport

Late Saturday night, a moment of calm in the Powderly neighborhood of Birmingham shattered when 31-year-old Jeremiah Stone was fatally shot while riding with a friend. According to the Birmingham Police Department, officers responded around 11:20 p.m. on November 8, 2025, to the 1800 block of Henry-Crumpton Drive after receiving reports of a person shot. Upon arrival they found Stone lying unresponsive in the roadway with a gunshot wound. Fire and Rescue pronounced him dead at the scene.

While the initial call was for a single shooting, investigators soon discovered a second victim: the friend traveling with Stone. That individual was located at a different address a short time later — the 2500 block of John Bryant Road — and transported to UAB Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators believe the two had been in the same vehicle when someone opened fire.

The motive remains under investigation. Detectives are working to determine if the shooting stemmed from a dispute earlier in the day. As of now, no arrests have been made and police are asking anyone with information to contact Homicide Detectives at 205-254-1764 or provide an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.

This tragic incident not only marks the loss of a young life but also brings renewed attention to nighttime violence in Birmingham’s residential neighborhoods. Stone’s family is mourning his unexpected death, and the police department has extended its condolences as the investigation continues.

More broadly, the shooting raises questions about what happened earlier that day and how a disagreement—if that’s what it was—escalated so quickly. The investigation will seek surveillance footage, witness statements and any link between the two shooting scenes to build a clearer narrative of events.

Residents in the area are shaken. A neighborhood that many consider peaceful in the late-evening hours now finds itself on edge after the violence spilled into the street. Neighbors are urging anyone who witnessed activity in the 1800 block of Henry-Crumpton Drive or the 2500 block of John Bryant Road around midnight to come forward.

For now, Stone’s death remains a deeply felt loss for the community, a stark reminder that the suddenness of gun violence leaves families and neighborhoods reeling. The investigation continues, and closures in the case will only bring more questions—and hopefully answers.
