Mankato: Community Mourns After 27-Year-Old Fatally Shot, Suspect in Custody

Posted on November 10, 2025 by Usainsightreport

Sunday morning in Mankato brought tragedy and urgency when 27-year-old Muridi Hassan Hussein of Mankato was shot and later died after driving himself to safety. At about 9:25 a.m., authorities say the incident began in the 400 block of Holly Lane. Hussein’s vehicle then traveled to a parking lot near Star Street—close to a Dunkin’—where he was pronounced dead.

Within hours, 23-year-old A’Quan Kaishaid Laurence Thorton of Mankato was arrested in connection with the shooting. Officers recovered a firearm at the scene, and they believe Thorton is responsible for Hussein’s death. The community has been assured that there is no ongoing threat — the suspect is in custody and the investigation remains active.

The call to the Mankato Department of Public Safety arrived at approximately 9:30 a.m. reporting a shooting in the Holly Lane vicinity. When police arrived, they found Hussein’s vehicle on the 1600 block of Madison Avenue, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene. Investigators believe he drove the vehicle from Holly Lane before succumbing to his injuries.

The investigation is being led by the Mankato Police Department, with support from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) and the Minnesota River Valley Drug Task Force. Authorities are asking anyone with information or surveillance footage from the Holly Lane or Star Street areas to contact 911 — their cooperation could be critical in piecing together the full timeline.

While the identity of both the victim and suspect have been confirmed—Hussein and Thorton respectively—the full motive behind the shooting remains unclear. Investigators say they are working swiftly to gather evidence, interview witnesses and review camera footage to determine what led to this deadly event.

The Mankato community is now grappling with the sudden loss of a young life. Friends and family of Hussein are left to mourn and search for answers. Meanwhile, local law enforcement continues to reassure the public that there is no immediate danger, even as they keep a heightened presence while the investigation unfolds.

As more details emerge, authorities press for community help. If you were near Holly Lane, Madison Avenue or Star Street the morning of the incident and captured any video or saw anything unusual, your information could be vital. The investigation remains open, and any piece of information—no matter how small—might make a difference in bringing clarity and closure.
