In Loving Memory of Matthew Best (1957–2025)

Posted on May 12, 2025 by Usainsightreport

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Matthew Best, the distinguished bass singer, conductor, and educator whose immense contribution to classical music will be remembered and cherished for generations.

A revered figure in the operatic and choral world, Matthew Best brought a rare depth of artistry and humanity to every role he undertook. Most notably, his long-standing relationship with Scottish Opera led to a series of unforgettable performances that remain etched in the hearts of audiences and colleagues alike. In Wagner’s Die Walküre (2003), his commanding portrayal of Wotan captured the grandeur, vulnerability, and tragic complexity of the god, offering a performance that was as vocally formidable as it was emotionally rich. Opera lovers will also recall his chilling and magnetic presence as Scarpia in Puccini’s Tosca across three different productions (1997, 1998, and 2004), where he brought terrifying authority and nuance to one of opera’s most infamous villains. His 2006 appearance as the Commendatore in Mozart’s Don Giovanni further demonstrated his ability to imbue roles with gravitas and mystery, enhancing each production with his unmistakable stage presence.

Beyond the opera stage, Matthew was equally esteemed for his work in sacred and choral music. His recordings of Rachmaninov’s Vespers and the sacred works of Bruckner are regarded as landmark interpretations, combining spiritual sensitivity with impeccable musicality. These recordings continue to inspire listeners and remain a testament to his refined artistry and deep musical understanding.

As the founder of the Corydon Singers, Matthew cultivated one of the UK’s most distinguished choral ensembles, shaping a unique and expressive sound that reflected his passionate commitment to choral excellence. His collaboration with the English Chamber Orchestra as a guest conductor further extended his influence, bringing his interpretive insights and stylistic intelligence to a wider repertoire.

Matthew’s legacy also lives on in the many young artists he mentored. In recent years, he served as a principal singing tutor at the Royal Northern College of Music, where he generously shared his knowledge, experience, and encouragement with the next generation of opera performers. His students, now flourishing on stages around the world, carry forward not only his technical wisdom but also the deep love of music that he so vividly embodied.

Today, we have been deeply moved by the memories and tributes shared by those who had the privilege of working alongside Matthew, or who were fortunate enough to witness the magic of his performances, particularly with Scottish Opera. His artistry, integrity, and quiet brilliance left an indelible mark on every ensemble, production, and individual he encountered.

Our heartfelt thoughts are with his family, friends, students, and colleagues during this time of profound loss.

May his memory continue to resonate, like the powerful notes he once sang, through the lives and music of all he touched.
