Yakima Police Investigating Fatal Shooting at Chesterley Skate Park Monday Night

Posted on May 13, 2025 by Usainsightreport

Yakima, WA – May 13, 2025 — A tragic scene unfolded at Chesterley Skate Park on Monday night, as Yakima police responded to a fatal shooting that left a 36-year-old man dead. The incident occurred shortly after 9:00 p.m., prompting an immediate and heavy police presence at the popular park, which is located in a residential neighborhood and frequently visited by local families and youth.

According to Yakima Police Department officials, the victim was discovered at the scene suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Despite life-saving efforts by emergency personnel, he was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased, pending notification of next of kin.

Following a swift investigation, officers arrested a 22-year-old male suspect from Yakima in connection with the shooting. The suspect has since been booked into the Yakima County Jail on a charge of Murder in the Second Degree. As of Tuesday morning, police had not released the suspect’s name, but they confirmed that he is believed to be directly involved in the deadly confrontation.

Investigators say the incident may be gang-motivated — a disturbing possibility that has community leaders and residents concerned about escalating violence in the area. Yakima Police Chief Matt Murray expressed his department’s commitment to fully investigating the circumstances leading up to the shooting.

“This is a tragic loss of life, and our thoughts are with the victim’s family,” Chief Murray stated. “We are actively pursuing all leads and working with our Gang Unit to determine if there is any gang affiliation connected to this case. We will continue our efforts to curb gang-related violence in our city.”

Chesterley Skate Park, located near 40th Avenue and River Road, has long been considered a safe space for local youth to skate, socialize, and enjoy recreational activities. Monday’s shooting has cast a shadow over that sense of security, raising new concerns about public safety, particularly in parks and open community spaces.

Local residents have voiced their shock and sadness over the shooting. “It’s heartbreaking to see something like this happen in a place where our kids come to have fun,” said Maria Rodriguez, a nearby resident. “We need to do more as a community to address the violence and support our young people.”

The Yakima Police Department is urging anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or has information related to the case to come forward. Tipsters can remain anonymous by contacting Yakima County Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS or submitting a tip online.

As the investigation continues, city officials are calling for calm and cooperation. In a statement released Tuesday morning, Mayor Janice Deccio said, “We are grieving alongside the family and friends of the victim. Our city will not tolerate violence, and we will work together to support law enforcement in bringing justice in this case.”

The Yakima Police Department has promised to provide further updates as more information becomes available. Meanwhile, the community grapples with yet another painful reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence
