Homicide Investigation Underway in Iroquois County Following Fatal Shooting Incident

Posted on May 13, 2025 by Usainsightreport

Iroquois County, Illinois — The Iroquois County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating a tragic homicide that occurred on the outskirts of Iroquois, Illinois, involving a series of harrowing events that began with a suspiciously abandoned vehicle and ended with the death of a local woman.

According to the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Department (ICSD), the situation began unfolding when a vehicle belonging to 38-year-old Nicholas Gregory was discovered left parked on a railroad crossing near 2150 North and 2750 East, in rural Iroquois County. Authorities report that Gregory left his vehicle there and proceeded to enter a nearby residence without permission. He later exited the home and stole the homeowner’s vehicle, which was parked in the driveway.

While returning to the location of the abandoned vehicle on the railroad tracks, Gregory encountered another vehicle that had stopped in front of his truck, which was obstructing the crossing. Inside that vehicle was 57-year-old Angela Taylor.

According to statements from the ICSD, Gregory exited the stolen vehicle and approached Taylor’s car. Angela reportedly stepped out of her vehicle, apparently to see what was happening. It was at this moment that Gregory allegedly drew a firearm and shot her once. The bullet struck Angela, who was critically wounded at the scene.

Gregory then fled the scene in his original vehicle — the one that had initially been parked on the tracks. Emergency responders transported Angela Taylor to St. Mary’s Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead due to the injuries sustained in the shooting.

Authorities say the violence did not stop there. After fleeing, Gregory made his way to a residence in Watseka, where he allegedly interacted with the occupant. The encounter quickly escalated when Gregory reportedly shouted threats, including stating that he intended to kill the resident, before speeding away from the location.

The escalating situation prompted a multijurisdictional response involving law enforcement from both Jasper County and Newton County Sheriff’s Departments. Following a coordinated pursuit, Nicholas Gregory was ultimately apprehended and taken into custody without further incident.

He is currently being held and faces charges of First-Degree Murder, with further charges likely pending as the investigation continues.

The Iroquois County Sheriff’s Office, along with supporting agencies, is working diligently to piece together the full timeline of events. They are urging anyone with additional information about Gregory’s actions or movements before or after the incident to come forward.

The Sheriff’s Department has also extended condolences to the family and friends of Angela Taylor, describing the incident as a “senseless and tragic act of violence.”

As the case develops, more details are expected to be released. Gregory remains in custody, and a court appearance is anticipated in the coming days.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation.
