Beloved Elmhurst Educator and Coach Terry Clarke Dies at 66 — Community Mourns a Legacy of Leadership, Mentorship, and Athletic Excellence

Terry Clarke, a revered educator and coach in Elmhurst, Illinois, passed away on May 17, 2025, in Austin, Texas, at the age of 66. His sudden passing has left a profound void in the hearts of those who knew him, especially within the Elmhurst community where he dedicated over four decades to teaching and coaching.

A Life Rooted in Leadership and Service

Born and raised in Taylorville, Illinois, Terry Clarke graduated from Taylorville High School in 1976. During his high school years, he was a multi-sport athlete, earning varsity letters in football, wrestling, track, and golf. His leadership qualities were evident early on, serving as vice president of his class and team captain in both football and wrestling. Beyond athletics, he was an active member of the band, student council, and Key Club. Continuing his passion for wrestling, Clarke attended Elmhurst College, where he earned three varsity letters. In 1980, he embarked on his teaching and coaching career at York High School in Elmhurst. That same year, he founded the Elmhurst Jr. Dukes Wrestling Club, fostering youth engagement in the sport. His commitment to wrestling extended beyond the school, as he became involved with the Illinois Wrestling Federation and the Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation, leading York High School to host 20 combined tournaments.

A Legacy of Excellence

Coach Clarke’s impact on York High School’s wrestling program was profound. Under his leadership, the team achieved 372 dual meet victories. He mentored 23 state qualifiers, including two IHSA state runners-up and five all-state place-winners. His dedication to his athletes went beyond the mat, as he instilled values of discipline, perseverance, and sportsmanship.

Beyond his coaching accolades, Clarke was known for his unwavering commitment to his students and athletes. He believed in the potential of every individual and worked tirelessly to help them achieve.

Remembering Coach Clarke

Terry Clarke is survived by his wife, JoAnn, and their children. His family, friends, students, and athletes mourn the loss of a man who dedicated his life to the betterment of others. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched and the indelible mark he left on the Elmhurst community.

A memorial service will be held to honor Coach Clarke’s life and contributions. Details will be shared with the community in the coming days.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Elmhurst Jr. Dukes Wrestling Club, ensuring that Coach Clarke’s passion for wrestling and youth development continues to thrive.
