On May 17, 2025, the rugged waters of Lake Superior once again tested the strength, courage, and coordination of those committed to preserving life and safety along her shores. When a fishing vessel north of Grand Marais began taking on water, time was of the essence—and help was on the way.
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore’s response vessel, the Arrowhead, joined forces with crews from U.S. Coast Guard Station Marquette and U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City in a well-coordinated rescue mission. The distressed vessel, battling the unforgiving lake conditions, had four individuals aboard—each facing a rapidly deteriorating situation.
Thanks to the swift and expert teamwork between the Arrowhead crew and the U.S. Coast Guard units, all four individuals were rescued safely, avoiding what could have been a tragic outcome on the icy waters. Once stabilized, the fishing vessel was towed back into port, ensuring not just the preservation of life, but also the recovery of the boat.
This incident serves as a powerful reminder of the essential partnerships and preparedness needed to respond to emergencies in one of the most remote and unpredictable regions of the Great Lakes. The professionalism, dedication, and bravery of every responder involved ensured this story had a positive ending.
A heartfelt thank you to:
