Sue Tarleton, 73, Tragically Killed in Dallas Shooting; 74-Year-Old Man Charged with Murder

DALLAS, TEXAS — A quiet Dallas neighborhood was shattered by violence on the evening of June 13, 2025, when 73-year-old Sue Tarleton was tragically shot and killed in the 1800 block of East Shore Circle. The Dallas Police Department has confirmed that 74-year-old Owen Smith has been arrested and charged with Murder in connection with the fatal shooting.

Authorities responded to reports of a shooting shortly after 6:00 p.m. When officers arrived on the scene, they found Sue Tarleton suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Emergency medical responders rushed to her aid, but despite life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The news of her passing has devastated friends, family, and neighbors, who describe Sue as a gentle, kind-hearted woman with a warm smile and a generous spirit. She was known to spend her days tending to her garden, visiting with neighbors, and remaining active in her church and community groups. Her death marks a heartbreaking loss for those who knew and loved her.

A Longtime Community Member

Sue Tarleton had lived in the East Shore Circle neighborhood for decades. She was described as a “pillar of calm and kindness” by residents who had grown up with her on the block. A retired schoolteacher, she had devoted much of her life to helping others—especially children—and was frequently seen volunteering at local libraries and community centers.

“She was the heart of this neighborhood,” said longtime neighbor Carla Benson. “Always willing to lend a hand, always asking how you were doing. It’s just unfathomable that something so violent could happen to someone like her.”

Suspect Arrested

Dallas police took Owen Smith, 74, into custody at the scene without incident. The motive for the shooting has not been publicly disclosed, and authorities have not revealed the nature of the relationship between Tarleton and Smith. However, investigators have stated that the incident does not appear to be random and are continuing to examine the circumstances that led to the fatal encounter.

Smith has been formally charged with Murder, and is currently being held at the Dallas County Jail. His bond and legal representation status were not immediately available at the time of this report.

Investigation Ongoing

The Dallas Police Homicide Unit is actively investigating the case and asking anyone who may have information about the events leading up to the shooting to come forward. Detectives are interviewing neighbors, reviewing surveillance footage, and collecting forensic evidence as part of their ongoing efforts to understand what prompted such a tragic outcome.

“We recognize the shock and pain this has caused the community,” said a Dallas Police spokesperson. “Our department is committed to pursuing justice for Ms. Tarleton and ensuring that all facts are brought to light.”

Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact the Dallas Police Department’s Homicide Unit at (214) 671-3661, or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers at (214) 373-TIPS (8477).

A Life Remembered

As the investigation unfolds, the community is coming together to mourn the loss of Sue Tarleton. A candlelight vigil is being planned by neighbors, and messages of remembrance have begun pouring in from former students, colleagues, and church members.

“She was more than a neighbor—she was family to all of us,” said Robert Jenkins, who lived across the street. “There’s a hole in this community now, and it won’t be filled.”

Friends of Tarleton have also launched an effort to establish a memorial scholarship in her name, honoring her decades of service in education and her unwavering commitment to children and lifelong learning.

In Loving Memory

Sue Tarleton’s life was one of grace, service, and quiet strength. Her tragic death serves as a stark reminder of how fleeting life can be—and of the deep wounds that senseless violence leaves behind. Though her life was taken too soon, her legacy of compassion, dedication, and neighborly love will live on in the hearts of those she touched.

Rest in peace, Sue Tarleton. You will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
