CHICAGO, IL — Two Chicago Police Officers Injured in Early Morning Crash While Responding to Emergency in Woodlawn Neighborhood

CHICAGO, IL —In the early hours of Wednesday, June 18, 2025, two Chicago police officers were injured in a traffic collision while responding to an emergency call in the city’s Woodlawn neighborhood, an incident that has drawn attention to the inherent risks law enforcement personnel face while performing their duties.

According to the Chicago Police Department, the crash occurred at an intersection while the officers were en route to a call for service. Their squad car, which had its lights and sirens activated, reportedly collided with a sedan that was traveling through the intersection. The impact caused visible damage to both vehicles, prompting a swift response from emergency crews and additional police units.

The officers, whose identities have not been released, sustained minor injuries as a result of the crash. They were quickly transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. Authorities confirmed that both officers are expected to make a full recovery and are in stable condition.

The driver of the other vehicle, who remained on the scene and cooperated with investigators, declined medical treatment. As of this time, no citations have been issued, and the investigation remains ongoing to determine the precise circumstances that led to the collision.

Witnesses in the area reported hearing the sound of sirens moments before the crash, followed by a loud bang and the arrival of additional first responders. Traffic in the immediate vicinity was briefly rerouted while the scene was cleared and preliminary assessments were conducted.

Chicago Police have emphasized that no criminal activity is suspected and that the crash appears to have been an unintentional incident that occurred in the line of duty. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) has also been notified, as is standard protocol for incidents involving officer injuries and city vehicles.

This incident underscores the challenges officers face while navigating congested city streets, even with emergency signals engaged. While the use of lights and sirens is intended to alert other motorists and expedite emergency response, intersections remain high-risk zones for crashes—particularly during early morning hours when visibility may be limited and traffic patterns can be unpredictable.

Community members in Woodlawn and throughout the city have voiced their support for the injured officers, with many expressing gratitude for their continued service and quick response to emergencies.

A statement from a CPD spokesperson read:

“We are thankful that our officers were not seriously injured in this morning’s crash and that everyone involved is safe. Their swift and dedicated response to a call for help reflects the unwavering commitment our officers demonstrate each day. We urge all motorists to remain alert and yield to emergency vehicles when sirens and lights are active.”

As of Wednesday evening, both officers were reported to be recovering well, and the department expects them to return to duty soon.

Motorists are reminded that when emergency vehicles are approaching with activated lights and sirens, state law requires yielding the right of way, pulling over safely, and allowing them to pass. Public cooperation can make a critical difference in response times and in the safety of all individuals involved.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is encouraged to contact the Chicago Police Department’s Major Accidents Investigation Unit.
