SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — Community Mourns the Sudden Loss of Joseph Colodne, Beloved Kean University Soccer Coach and Mentor

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — The town of Scotch Plains, along with the broader New Jersey collegiate athletics community, is reeling from the sudden and heartbreaking passing of Joseph Colodne, an assistant coach for the Kean University women’s soccer team and a deeply cherished local figure. Colodne’s death, confirmed earlier this week, has sent shockwaves through the lives of players, colleagues, neighbors, and friends, all of whom remember him for his unwavering dedication to the sport, his boundless encouragement, and his warm, steady presence.

While the cause of death has not been officially disclosed, the loss of Coach Colodne has prompted an overwhelming outpouring of grief and gratitude from those he mentored and supported throughout his life.

For years, Joseph Colodne stood not only on the sidelines of the pitch but at the very heart of his teams, encouraging athletes to push beyond their limits and reminding them that character mattered just as much as performance. At Kean University, where he served as assistant coach for the women’s soccer program, Colodne was known for his tireless commitment to player development, not only as athletes but as leaders, students, and young women navigating life both on and off the field.

“Coach Joe was a constant source of belief and encouragement,” said one Kean University senior. “He always saw the best in us, even when we didn’t see it ourselves.”

Colodne’s roots ran deep in Scotch Plains, where he was known as a friend, mentor, and neighbor whose easy smile and giving spirit made him a fixture at local sporting events, fundraisers, and community gatherings. Whether volunteering to coach youth teams or offering advice to a player struggling with confidence, his impact extended far beyond the scoreboard.

In tributes shared by the Kean University athletics department and countless social media posts, Colodne has been described as “an incredible coach,” “a loyal friend,” “a builder of dreams,” and most notably, “a safe harbor in the storm” for many students going through personal challenges. He was someone who always had time — whether it was for an extra training session, a pep talk, or just listening.

“Joe gave so much more than he ever asked in return,” said Kean Head Coach Emily Rivera. “He was the kind of coach who made everyone feel seen and valued. He brought calm, joy, and perspective to everything we did. This loss is unimaginable.”

The Kean University women’s soccer team plans to wear black armbands for the upcoming season in memory of their beloved coach. A moment of silence is scheduled before their first home game, and the university is working with the family to plan a memorial scholarship in his honor — one that will benefit student-athletes who embody Colodne’s core values: resilience, humility, teamwork, and kindness.

In Scotch Plains, neighbors are organizing a candlelight vigil to take place this Friday evening at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School’s soccer field, where many first came to know and admire Colodne as a coach and mentor in the local soccer leagues. Organizers are encouraging those attending to bring flowers, soccer scarves, and hand-written messages to contribute to a growing memorial that will be shared with his family.

Colodne is survived by his family, including his parents and siblings, who have expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of support. In a statement, they said:

“Joseph was a bright light in our lives and in the lives of so many. He loved deeply, gave selflessly, and found joy in helping others achieve their dreams. We are heartbroken, but we are comforted knowing how many lives he touched.”

Though his time was far too brief, Joseph Colodne’s legacy will endure — on the fields where his players now run, in the hearts of those he guided, and in the countless acts of quiet generosity he offered without fanfare. In every game played, in every player inspired, and in every moment of perseverance, Coach Joe’s spirit will live on.

Rest easy, Coach Colodne. Your team will carry your legacy forward.
