ROXBURY, MA — Boston Police Identify 21-Year-Old Teo Vernice as Victim in Thursday Night’s Fatal Shooting

ROXBURY, MA — June 21, 2025 — A wave of grief and concern has swept through the Roxbury and Hyde Park communities following the tragic death of 21-year-old Teo Vernice, who was fatally shot Thursday night in what authorities are calling a targeted act of violence.

The shooting occurred shortly after 10:00 p.m. on June 19, when officers from District B-2 (Roxbury) responded to a 911 call reporting gunfire and a person down near 163 Ruthven Street. Upon arrival, officers found Vernice suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Boston EMS rushed to the scene, but despite their efforts, Vernice was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to a nearby hospital.

According to police, the investigation into the shooting remains active and ongoing. Detectives from the Boston Police Homicide Unit canvassed the area late into the night, searching for witnesses, security footage, and any leads that might shed light on the circumstances surrounding Vernice’s murder. No arrests have been made at this time, and police have not released any information regarding a suspect or possible motive.

About the Victim: Teo Vernice

Teo Vernice, a Hyde Park resident, was remembered by friends and family as a passionate and ambitious young man. He had recently completed a local vocational training program and was preparing to start work in the electrical trade. Known for his sense of humor, creativity, and protective nature, Teo’s death has left a gaping void in the lives of those closest to him.

“He was just getting started,” said one longtime family friend. “He had plans, goals, and a good heart. He didn’t deserve this.”

Loved ones say Teo was deeply rooted in his community, often mentoring younger teens and encouraging them to stay focused and away from street violence—a tragic irony that now surrounds his own death.

Scene and Community Impact

Ruthven Street, typically a quiet residential area, was swarmed with flashing lights, crime scene tape, and anxious neighbors Thursday night as police worked to secure the area and comfort nearby residents. The incident has reignited fears over gun violence in Boston neighborhoods and prompted renewed calls for stronger community support systems and intervention programs.

City Council members and local activists have already begun organizing vigils and peace walks in Teo’s honor, vowing to stand against the rising tide of youth violence. “We cannot let another name be added to a growing list of young lives lost,” said a community organizer during a Friday press briefing. “Teo’s life mattered, and we will not forget him.”
