Granger, IN — June 19, 2025: Tragedy on State Road 23 Claims Life of Beloved Motorcyclist Alex Nelund

Granger, IN — What began as an ordinary summer afternoon quickly turned devastating for the communities of Granger and South Bend. At approximately 3:15 p.m. on June 19, 2025, emergency dispatchers began receiving a flurry of 911 calls reporting a serious traffic collision on State Road 23, near the intersection with West Sample Street. Within moments, first responders from multiple agencies were dispatched to the scene—what they found was a devastating crash that would forever alter several lives.

Motorcyclist Alex Nelund, 39, of South Bend, was traveling northbound on his black and red Harley-Davidson when tragedy struck. According to preliminary reports from the Indiana State Police and eyewitness accounts, a vehicle attempting to turn onto West Sample Street from the southbound lane either misjudged the distance or failed to see Alex approaching. The result was a violent impact between the Harley and the turning vehicle, which sent Alex airborne and his motorcycle skidding into a ditch.

Paramedics arrived within minutes and immediately began life-saving efforts. Sadly, despite all attempts, Alex was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle, whose identity has not yet been released pending investigation, was reportedly treated for non-life-threatening injuries and is cooperating with authorities. Toxicology reports are pending, and the crash remains under active investigation by the St. Joseph County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team (FACT).

The loss of Alex Nelund has sent shockwaves through the Michiana region. Known for his vibrant spirit, mechanical know-how, and infectious smile, Alex was more than just a motorcycle enthusiast—he was a pillar of his community. Friends describe him as someone who was always willing to lend a hand, whether fixing a neighbor’s car or volunteering at local charity rides. “He was fearless on the road and full of heart off of it,” said longtime friend and fellow rider Mike Turner. “There wasn’t a single person who didn’t like Alex. He made every ride feel like freedom.”

Alex worked as a diesel mechanic at a trucking company in Elkhart and spent his weekends either tuning bikes or riding with the Michiana Freedom Riders, a local group known for their charitable outreach and camaraderie. Just days before the crash, Alex had posted a photo of his Harley with the caption, “Sunshine, open road, and nothing but good vibes.” It’s a sentiment his friends say perfectly encapsulated his spirit.

As news of the tragedy spread, an impromptu memorial began to form near the crash site. Candles, flowers, helmets, and handwritten notes now line the roadside. The Michiana motorcycle community is also planning a memorial ride in Alex’s honor, with riders expected to gather from across northern Indiana and southern Michigan. “We ride for those who can’t anymore,” said Michelle Raynor, one of the ride organizers. “Alex deserves that and so much more.”

He is survived by his parents, John and Marla Nelund; his younger sister, Casey; and his fiancée, Heather, whom he had planned to marry in the fall. “We were talking about wedding venues the night before,” Heather shared tearfully. “Now I’m trying to figure out how to say goodbye instead of ‘I do.’”

Local officials are using this tragedy as a solemn reminder of the importance of roadway awareness—particularly when sharing the road with motorcyclists, who remain among the most vulnerable travelers. “Look twice, save a life” is not just a slogan, but a plea echoed by advocates across the state.

As the investigation continues, the community clings tightly to the memory of a man who lived with passion, loved with intensity, and rode like the wind was always at his back. In the words of a tribute posted at the crash site: “Ride in peace, Alex. We’ll hear your engine in every thunderstorm.”

A public vigil is being organized and details will be shared once finalized. In the meantime, donations in Alex Nelund’s honor are being accepted to benefit local motorcycle safety awareness programs and grief support services for accident survivors.
