High-Speed Chase in Bexar County Ends in Officer-Involved Shooting; Suspect in Surgery After Being Shot Multiple Times

BEXAR COUNTY, TX — June 21, 2025 — A dramatic high-speed pursuit through the streets of south Bexar County ended in gunfire Saturday night, leaving a 31-year-old suspect hospitalized and undergoing emergency surgery after being shot multiple times by a Bexar County Sheriff’s deputy, according to Sheriff Javier Salazar.

The incident began when a BCSO deputy attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle flagged by an automated license plate scanner as being reported stolen out of Atascosa County. The deputy initiated the stop, but instead of pulling over, the driver fled, leading the deputy on a dangerous high-speed chase through south Bexar County.

Sheriff Salazar said the chase reached speeds that posed a significant risk to public safety. It ultimately came to a tense conclusion when the suspect’s vehicle approached a dead-end road, causing him to slow down. Seizing the opportunity, the pursuing deputy exited his patrol unit and began to approach.

However, according to Sheriff Salazar, the suspect suddenly attempted a U-turn and accelerated directly toward the deputy, prompting the officer to fire his service weapon three to four times in defense. The suspect was struck multiple times.

Despite the seriousness of his injuries, the suspect survived the shooting and was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in stable condition prior to undergoing emergency surgery. No identifying details about the hospital or the suspect’s specific injuries have been released.

The suspect’s name has not yet been made public, but Sheriff Salazar confirmed the man is 31 years old and has an extensive criminal history, including multiple outstanding warrants at the time of the incident. His previous offenses and the exact nature of the warrants have not been disclosed.

A passenger in the stolen vehicle suffered minor injuries, believed to be related to the crash or sudden stop at the end of the chase. According to Salazar, the passenger will not face any charges at this time, as investigators do not believe they were involved in the theft or in any threatening behavior during the encounter.

The deputy involved in the shooting, who has been with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office for approximately one year, was not injured during the incident. Per departmental protocol, the deputy has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of an internal investigation into the use of force.

Sheriff Salazar addressed the incident during a late-night press briefing, stating, “This deputy was placed in a dangerous and potentially deadly situation. Based on the early details we’ve reviewed, it appears the suspect tried to use the vehicle as a weapon. Thankfully, our deputy was not injured.”

The shooting and the events leading up to it are now under formal investigation by the BCSO Internal Affairs Unit, as well as a separate team focused on officer-involved shootings.

Sheriff Salazar emphasized that all use-of-force incidents are taken seriously and undergo a thorough and transparent review process. Body camera and dashcam footage from the pursuit and shooting will be carefully examined as part of the investigation.

As the community awaits further updates, officials are urging anyone who may have witnessed the pursuit or the incident at the dead-end road to come forward with information.

This is a developing story, and additional details will be released as the investigation continues.
