GOSHEN & ELKHART, IN — Communities Grieve the Heartbreaking Loss of Joseph Higgins Jr. in Tragic Vehicle Crash

June 23, 2025 — The close-knit communities of Goshen and Elkhart, Indiana, are mourning the heartbreaking and untimely death of Joseph Higgins Jr., whose life was tragically cut short on the evening of Saturday, June 21, 2025, in a devastating motor vehicle crash. The news of Joseph’s passing has rippled through both towns, leaving behind a wave of sorrow, disbelief, and heartfelt remembrance for a man whose presence meant so much to so many.

According to local authorities, the fatal crash occurred shortly after 9:00 p.m. along County Road 17, just south of U.S. Route 33. Joseph, 29, was driving home from a family gathering when his vehicle was reportedly struck by another driver traveling at a high rate of speed. Emergency personnel responded quickly to the scene, but despite lifesaving efforts, Joseph succumbed to his injuries at the site of the crash.

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed an active investigation into the circumstances of the collision. Preliminary reports suggest that speed and possible impairment may have been contributing factors, though officials have not yet released the name of the other driver. Charges are expected as the case unfolds.

Remembering Joseph Higgins Jr.

Known affectionately to many as “Joey,” Joseph Higgins Jr. was a beacon of warmth, humor, and quiet strength. Born and raised in Elkhart and a proud graduate of Goshen High School, he was admired not only for his hardworking nature but for his deep-rooted love for family, friends, and community.

At the time of his death, Joseph worked as a line supervisor at a local manufacturing plant, where colleagues say he led with integrity, humility, and an unshakable work ethic. But it was outside of work—at barbecues, on the basketball court, at his niece’s school plays—where his heart truly shined.

“He was that person who showed up, every time, no matter what,” said his older sister, Anesha Higgins. “Whether it was 3 a.m. and your car broke down, or you just needed someone to listen, Joey was the one you called. And he always, always showed up.”

Joseph was a loving son, a doting uncle, a loyal friend, and a pillar of his neighborhood. He was also a mentor to many of the local youth in both Goshen and Elkhart, often volunteering with youth sports programs and school events. His sense of humor was unmatched—known for his quick wit and heartwarming pranks—and his laughter could be heard across a room.

“He had a way of making you feel like the most important person in the world,” said longtime friend Marcus Boyd. “Joey didn’t just take up space—he filled it with joy, with purpose, with love.”

An Outpouring of Grief and Support

Since news of the crash spread, tributes have poured in across social media, from classmates, coworkers, and neighbors who remember Joseph as generous, grounded, and full of life. A growing memorial of flowers, candles, and handwritten notes now adorns the corner of the crash site, where community members continue to stop and pay their respects.

Both Goshen and Elkhart city officials have expressed condolences to the Higgins family, acknowledging the profound impact Joseph had on the local community.

“We lost someone special—not just a resident, but a role model,” said Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, and we join them in mourning this terrible loss.”

A candlelight vigil organized by local churches and youth leaders is scheduled for Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. at Walker Park in Goshen. The event will serve as a celebration of Joseph’s life and as a call for safer roads and responsible driving.

Seeking Justice and Healing

As investigators continue piecing together the events that led to the crash, Joseph’s loved ones are advocating for accountability and change. The family is working closely with Elkhart County prosecutors to ensure a full investigation is conducted and that those responsible are held to account.

“Nothing will bring Joey back,” said his mother, Latonya Higgins, through tears. “But we want his life—and his death—to mean something. We want people to slow down. To think before they drive. To value life the way he did.”

Final Farewell

Funeral services for Joseph Higgins Jr. will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at New Vision Baptist Church in Elkhart. A public viewing will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the service at 12:00 p.m. The burial will take place immediately afterward at Prairie Street Cemetery.

The Higgins family has invited all who knew Joseph—or were touched by his life—to attend and share in honoring his memory. Attendees are encouraged to wear red, Joseph’s favorite color, in tribute to his bold spirit and boundless heart.

In lieu of flowers, the family has established the Joseph Higgins Jr. Memorial Fund, which will support youth mentorship programs in Elkhart and Goshen—ensuring that Joseph’s legacy of love and leadership lives on in the next generation.

As Goshen and Elkhart mourn together, they also stand united in gratitude for the life of a man who gave so much to so many. Though the pain of his loss is deep, so too is the imprint of his spirit—a reminder to live fully, love fiercely, and never take a single moment for granted.

Rest in peace, Joey. You are deeply missed. Your light remains.
