Tragedy in Newark: 18-Year-Old Brandyn Waters Killed, Four Others Injured in Late-Night Shooting

NEWARK, NJ — A wave of sorrow and outrage has swept through the communities of Newark and Paterson following a deadly shooting late Monday night that claimed the life of 18-year-old Brandyn Waters, a young man from Paterson with his whole future ahead of him. The incident, which also left four others injured, occurred around 11:40 p.m. in Newark’s Roseville section, specifically at 367 6th Avenue.

The heartbreaking violence has once again brought into sharp focus the urgent need for solutions to stem the tide of gun violence impacting cities across New Jersey and the nation.

A Promising Life Cut Short

Brandyn Waters, described by friends and family as ambitious, kindhearted, and full of life, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. At just 18 years old, he had recently graduated from high school and was looking forward to enrolling in a local college in the fall. Those close to him say he had dreams of becoming an entrepreneur and giving back to his community.

“He was the kind of kid who lit up the room,” said a family friend. “He had a way of making everyone feel seen. Losing him like this… it’s devastating.”

Chaos on 6th Avenue

According to authorities, the shooting erupted during a gathering at the 6th Avenue residence. Investigators believe multiple individuals were targeted, though the motive remains unclear. The four other victims, whose identities have not yet been released, were rushed to area hospitals with various injuries. Their conditions have not been publicly confirmed, but police stated that all are expected to survive.

The Newark Police Department, along with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, is leading the investigation. Officers were seen canvassing the area well into the early morning hours, interviewing witnesses and collecting forensic evidence. No arrests have been announced as of Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Newark’s Crime Stoppers or by calling the Essex County Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force at 1-877-TIPS-4EC.

Two Communities United in Grief

As news of Brandyn’s death spread, a somber unity has emerged between Newark and Paterson—two cities long affected by the ripple effects of gun violence. Candlelight vigils are being planned in both cities to honor Brandyn’s memory and to offer prayers for the other injured victims.

Community members and leaders alike are expressing frustration over the ongoing violence, calling for comprehensive strategies that address not only crime but also the root causes—poverty, youth disconnection, lack of mental health support, and easy access to firearms.

“We can’t keep burying our kids,” said a local Newark pastor during a press conference. “Brandyn’s name joins far too many others. It’s time to stop talking and start acting.”

Remembering Brandyn Waters

Brandyn’s family has requested privacy as they begin to navigate their unimaginable loss. However, close friends have shared that they plan to establish a scholarship fund in his name, aimed at helping youth in Paterson and Newark pursue their educational and career goals—just as Brandyn intended for himself.

His death is a reminder that behind every crime statistic is a real person, a grieving family, and a future lost.

If you have any information about this shooting, please contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office or Newark Police Department. Tips can be given anonymously and could help bring justice to Brandyn and peace to a family that will never be the same.

Rest in Peace, Brandyn Waters. You were loved. You mattered. And you will not be forgotten.
