Man Arrested for Felony Theft After Ice Chest Stolen at Little League All-Star Game in Butte County

CHICO, CA — A community baseball event turned into a criminal investigation after a theft occurred during a Little League All-Star Game on June 23, prompting a swift response from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) that ultimately led to the arrest of 37-year-old Oscar Cardenas.

According to authorities, the incident took place near Southgate Avenue, where a citizen had parked his vehicle while attending the youth baseball game. During the event, the individual returned to discover that an ice chest had been stolen from inside his vehicle. The victim immediately began searching the surrounding area for signs of the stolen property—and the person responsible.

Citizen Tracks Down Theft Suspect, Alerts Deputies

In a rare turn of events, the victim successfully located the suspect nearby and recovered the stolen ice chest. He promptly contacted the Butte County Sheriff’s Office, providing dispatchers with a description of the suspect and his location.

A BCSO sergeant responded to the area of Entler Avenue in Chico, where he encountered the suspect, later identified as Oscar Cardenas, who was detained for further investigation.

Search Reveals More Items and Probation Violation

Authorities soon discovered that Oscar Cardenas was on searchable probation, allowing deputies to conduct a search without a warrant. During that search, Cardenas was found to be in possession of additional items, including a canister of pepper spray and a baseball bat that deputies believe may also have been stolen. Investigators are now working to determine the origin of those items and whether additional victims are involved.

Because of Cardenas’s probation status and his criminal history, he is facing enhanced charges under California’s Proposition 36, a law that allows for stricter penalties for certain repeat offenses. As a result, he has been booked on felony theft charges.

Community Safety at Family Event Breached

The theft, which occurred during a family-friendly community sporting event, has left many residents frustrated and concerned. Little League games are meant to be safe, joyful gatherings for children and their families, and the violation of that space by criminal activity has struck a nerve in the local community.

“It’s unsettling,” said one parent who attended the game. “We come here to support our kids and enjoy the game, not worry about someone breaking into our vehicles.”

BCSO Urges Vigilance and Praises Public Involvement

The Butte County Sheriff’s Office praised the quick-thinking actions of the victim, whose willingness to act and report led to a successful resolution. They also used the opportunity to remind the public to secure personal belongings, especially during large gatherings, and to report suspicious behavior.

“We encourage citizens to remain aware of their surroundings and notify law enforcement immediately if they witness any criminal activity,” said a spokesperson for BCSO. “In this case, the victim’s initiative helped lead us directly to the suspect.”

Authorities are continuing to investigate whether any additional stolen property may be connected to Oscar Cardenas. Anyone with information related to the theft or other potential victims is encouraged to contact the Butte County Sheriff’s Office at (530) 538-7321.

As the summer sports season continues, local law enforcement and community members alike are working together to ensure that events like Little League games remain safe, family-centered spaces — free from theft, disruption, or fear.
