Detroit Police Intensify Statewide Manhunt for Ford Fireworks Shooting Suspects

DETROIT, MI — June 27, 2025 — The Detroit Police Department, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies across Michigan, is actively searching for two suspects connected to the 2025 Ford Fireworks shooting that sent panic through downtown Detroit earlier this week. Authorities have identified Alphonso Cooper Jr. and Markalowe Keith Steen Jr. as key individuals wanted in connection with the incident.

The large-scale public event, intended to celebrate community and independence, was marred by gunfire that left several people injured and hundreds fleeing for safety. The shooting occurred during one of Detroit’s most iconic annual traditions, drawing thousands of families, children, and visitors to the riverfront. Investigators have worked around the clock since the incident to identify those responsible.

Chief Bettison: “We Will Find Them”

During a press briefing Friday, Detroit Police Chief Todd A. Bettison emphasized the urgency and scope of the manhunt.

“I do not want them to have an enjoyable, stress-free weekend. I want them to know that we are out there,” said Bettison. “We’re leveraging every resource — technology, intelligence, and our deep partnerships across city and county lines. It is only a matter of time before Alphonso Cooper Jr. and Markalowe Keith Steen Jr. are in custody.”

Chief Bettison made it clear that harboring or aiding either suspect will not be tolerated and will result in legal consequences.

Ongoing Investigation and Statewide Collaboration

Authorities have expanded the search beyond Detroit’s city limits, actively monitoring neighboring cities and counties with support from:

  • Michigan State Police
  • County Sheriff’s Offices
  • U.S. Marshals Service
  • Local precincts with existing inter-agency agreements

Investigators say surveillance footage, license plate tracking technology, and community tips are being used to locate the suspects, both of whom are believed to be armed and dangerous.

Community Response and Appeal for Information

The Detroit community has responded with urgency, submitting a significant number of tips since the department released the suspects’ names. Chief Bettison thanked the public for its cooperation and urged anyone with further information to come forward.

“We’ve received dozens of useful tips, and I want to thank the people of Detroit for stepping up. We’re asking anyone who knows where these two men might be — or who may have seen anything that night — to call immediately.”

Closing Message from Police

“This was an attack on public safety and a sacred community celebration,” said Chief Bettison. “We owe it to the victims and the people of Detroit to make sure justice is served. We will not rest until these individuals are brought in.”

The Ford Fireworks celebration is meant to be a time of joy — not tragedy. With community help and relentless determination, Detroit Police are determined to restore that sense of safety and accountability.

This remains a developing story. Further updates will be released as they become available.
