BREAKING: Spokane Police Arrest Mother of Murder Suspect Accused of Aiding His Escape After Fatal Shooting of 13-Year-Old Gavin Looper

SPOKANE, Wash. — In a major development in the investigation into the tragic shooting death of 13-year-old Gavin Looper, Spokane Police have arrested the mother of the accused gunman for allegedly helping her son flee the state to avoid capture.

Authorities say the suspect’s mother, whose name has not yet been officially released, was taken into custody late Friday on charges of rendering criminal assistance in the first degree, a serious felony in Washington State. Police allege that she actively helped her son evade law enforcement after the fatal shooting by assisting him in leaving Spokane and crossing state lines.

The accused shooter — whose identity has been withheld due to the ongoing nature of the case — is believed to have fatally shot Gavin Looper earlier this month. Gavin, a beloved middle school student, was shot and killed in a residential neighborhood under circumstances that are still being pieced together by detectives. The motive behind the shooting has not yet been publicly disclosed, but investigators have indicated that it was not a random act of violence.

Following the shooting, Spokane Police launched an intensive manhunt for the suspect, who disappeared shortly after the incident. As the investigation unfolded, detectives began to suspect that he had received assistance in avoiding arrest. Through interviews, surveillance footage, and cell phone tracking, law enforcement determined that the suspect’s mother had played a key role in orchestrating his escape.

In a press release, Spokane Police Chief Jacqui MacConnell stated:

“This arrest sends a clear message — if you aid someone in fleeing justice, especially in a case involving the death of a child, you will be held accountable. Our investigators worked tirelessly to follow every lead, and we are committed to bringing every responsible party to justice.”

Gavin Looper’s death has devastated his family and the greater Spokane community. Vigils and memorials have been held across the city in honor of the young boy, who was described by teachers and friends as bright, kindhearted, and full of promise. His senseless killing has reignited conversations about youth violence, access to firearms, and community responsibility.

The mother is currently being held at the Spokane County Jail and is expected to be formally arraigned early next week. The search for her son, the primary suspect in Gavin’s murder, remains ongoing, though police say they are closing in.

The Spokane Police Department is urging anyone with information about the suspect’s whereabouts to contact Crime Check at (509) 456-2233. Anonymous tips may also be submitted through the department’s tip line.

Gavin’s family issued a brief statement through a representative:

“We are heartbroken but thankful for the progress being made in holding those responsible accountable. Gavin deserved so much more from this world, and we pray justice will be fully served.”

More updates will be provided as this story develops.
