Seven People Shot in Mass Shooting on July 4th in Chicago’s Back of the Yards Neighborhood

Posted on July 5, 2025 by Usainsightreport

CHICAGO, IL – July 5, 2025 – A Fourth of July celebration turned into a scene of terror and tragedy Friday night as seven people were shot in a mass shooting on South Justine Street in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side.

The shooting took place just after 11:00 p.m. on July 4th, when families and neighbors were still gathered outside enjoying the final hours of the holiday. According to eyewitness accounts and footage shared by independent journalist Kyle Mazza, chaos erupted when gunfire suddenly rang out, sending people fleeing for cover as shots echoed through the block.

A Night Meant for Celebration Ends in Violence

What began as a peaceful night of fireworks and family barbecues ended with flashing lights and sirens. At least seven individuals were struck by gunfire in the sudden and senseless attack. Chicago police and multiple ambulances rushed to the 5200 block of South Justine Street, quickly establishing a perimeter and providing emergency care to victims scattered across the sidewalk and nearby yards.

As of Saturday morning, no arrests have been made, and the conditions of the victims have not yet been released by authorities. Police are currently interviewing witnesses, reviewing surveillance footage, and canvassing the area for additional leads.

Kyle Mazza Documents the Aftermath

Journalist Kyle Mazza, who arrived at the scene shortly after the shooting, captured dramatic video and photos showing a heavy police presence, with multiple victims being loaded into ambulances under flashing lights and the watch of armed officers. The footage has circulated widely online, drawing both national attention and community outrage.

Residents Demand Answers

Back of the Yards residents say they are devastated, and many are expressing growing frustration with the cycle of gun violence that has plagued their neighborhood for years.

“We were just sitting outside watching fireworks. Kids were out, families were out. Then it was like a war zone,” said one local resident who declined to be identified out of fear.

Others have called on city leaders to increase community policing, invest in anti-violence programs, and address the root causes that continue to fuel shootings in historically underserved areas like Back of the Yards.

Ongoing Investigation

The Chicago Police Department has yet to release a motive or information on potential suspects. No firearm has been recovered at this time, and it remains unclear whether the shooting was targeted or random.

Detectives are working around the clock to gather evidence, and authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward.

“Our detectives are actively pursuing all available leads,” a CPD spokesperson said. “We ask anyone who may have seen or heard anything to please contact Area One detectives or submit tips anonymously.”

A Community on Edge

Friday night’s mass shooting adds to a growing list of violent incidents that have marred the city’s summer so far. For many residents of Back of the Yards, it is another painful reminder that the trauma of gun violence continues to touch too many lives.

Local organizations and crisis response teams are expected to be in the area throughout the weekend, offering counseling, support services, and resources for those affected.

As the city reflects on what should have been a celebration of freedom and unity, families across Chicago are once again forced to reckon with the real cost of gun violence.

Anyone with information is urged to call Area One Detectives at (312) 747-8380 or submit an anonymous tip at cpdtip.com.
