IBERVILLE PARISH, LOUISIANA — The Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the arrest of a suspect in the tragic and senseless stabbing death of St. Gabriel Police Captain Devon Boutte, a decorated law enforcement officer who had served his community with honor for more than a decade.

According to Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi, the deadly incident took place on Sunday on Legion Street in St. Gabriel, following an argument between the suspect and Captain Boutte. The dispute escalated quickly and ended in devastating violence.

Captain Boutte was fatally stabbed, and despite emergency efforts, he did not survive his injuries. His death has shocked and devastated not only the St. Gabriel Police Department but the entire community that knew and loved him.

A Devoted Officer and Community Leader

Captain Devon Boutte, affectionately known by friends and colleagues as “Curly,” had proudly served with the St. Gabriel Police Department for approximately 12 years. At the time of his death, he held the rank of Captain of the Uniform Patrol Division, a position of leadership and trust within the department.

Described as deeply committed, kind-hearted, and always willing to go above and beyond the call of duty, Devon was much more than a uniform—he was a mentor, a protector, and a friend to many.

The City of St. Gabriel released a statement honoring Captain Boutte’s service and legacy:

“Captain Devon Boutte dedicated his career to protecting and uplifting our community. He was a beloved member of the St. Gabriel Police Department family, and his loss will be felt deeply throughout the city. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this heartbreaking time.”

Suspect in Custody

Sheriff Stassi confirmed that 25-year-old Warren Mitchell III, also of St. Gabriel, has been arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder in connection with Captain Boutte’s death.

Mitchell was booked into the Iberville Parish Jail shortly after the incident, and investigators are continuing to gather evidence and witness statements. Authorities believe the altercation between the two men was not random, and they are working to determine what led to the confrontation.

Sheriff Stassi also expressed his condolences:

“This is a devastating loss not only for the St. Gabriel Police Department, but for the entire law enforcement community in Iberville Parish. Captain Boutte served with honor and distinction, and his absence will be deeply felt. We are committed to ensuring justice is served.”

Community in Mourning

The news of Captain Boutte’s death has spread rapidly through the community, drawing messages of grief, shock, and support from fellow officers, public officials, and residents.

In front of the St. Gabriel Police Department, community members have begun placing candles, flowers, and handwritten notes in memory of “Curly.” Flags are flying at half-staff in his honor, and plans for a public memorial are already underway.

“Captain Boutte was a great man—he treated everyone with respect and always made time for people,” one resident said. “It’s hard to believe he’s gone.”

A Call for Unity and Justice

This tragedy has left many in law enforcement and the public grappling with the painful loss of one of their finest. As the investigation continues, officials are calling on the community to come together to honor Captain Boutte’s memory through unity, strength, and support for his family and department.
