Bardstown Mourns as Driver Loses Life in Midnight Crash into Historic Courthouse

BARDSTOWN, Ky. – A devastating single-vehicle accident in the heart of Bardstown has left the community in mourning after a crash near the Old Courthouse early Thursday morning, July 24, 2025.

The Nelson County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the victim of the crash, pending notification of family members. According to the Bardstown Police Department, the incident occurred shortly after midnight when a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu veered off the roadway and struck the east side of the historic courthouse on Court Square.

Emergency responders arrived promptly at the scene, but the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced deceased on-site. The identity of the driver remains undisclosed as authorities work to notify next of kin, and no further details about the individual have been released.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the Bardstown Police Department, with authorities yet to determine what factors may have contributed to the vehicle leaving the roadway. No additional information regarding the circumstances leading to the accident has been made public at this time.

Local officials have confirmed that the historic Old Courthouse sustained minor damage in the collision, but there was no structural compromise to the building, which remains a central landmark in Bardstown. The incident has shaken the close-knit community, serving as a somber reminder of the fragility of life.
