Posted on August 1, 2025 by Usainsightreport

PATERSON, NJ — A months-long investigation into a series of assaults and vandalism targeting jitney bus operators in Paterson culminated in the arrest of 37-year-old Juan C. Hichez, authorities announced. Hichez was apprehended on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, near Madison and Park Avenues by the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Sheriff Thomas Adamo, Hichez is accused of engaging in a pattern of violent and disruptive behavior against public transit operators since January 2025. The allegations include physically assaulting multiple jitney bus drivers, causing significant property damage to buses, and repeatedly evading payment for transportation services. In one reported incident, Hichez allegedly threw a rock at a bus door, shattering the glass. In another, he is said to have struck a driver in the head multiple times after refusing to pay his fare on Park Avenue.

Following an extensive investigation by the Sheriff’s Bureau of Narcotics and Fugitive Warrant Squad, Hichez faces multiple charges, including:

– Aggravated Assault on a Motorbus Operator
– Criminal Mischief
– Theft of Services
– Unlawful Possession of a Weapon

While specific details about the weapon involved or the exact number of incidents have not been publicly disclosed, authorities emphasized that Hichez’s actions disrupted public transportation and posed significant safety concerns for commuters and operators alike.

“Citizens should feel safe as they travel throughout our County,” Sheriff Adamo said in a statement. “Illegal behavior will not be tolerated by the Sheriff’s Office, and we will continue to pursue those who threaten public safety.”

The arrest was executed without incident, and Hichez is currently in custody awaiting a court appearance. The Passaic County Sheriff’s Office has not released additional details, such as surveillance footage or witness statements, but indicated that more information may be forthcoming as the case progresses.

The Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with information about similar incidents involving jitney buses to contact their tip line, as the investigation remains ongoing.

Jitney buses serve as a critical mode of transportation for many Paterson residents, connecting them to jobs, education, and essential services. Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the safety of these transit systems and the dedicated operators who keep them running.
