Fayetteville, NC – Man Claims Self-Defense in Fatal Sunday Morning Shooting at Barton’s Landing Apartments

Posted on May 4, 2025 by Usainsightreport

FAYETTEVILLE, NC — A quiet Sunday morning took a violent turn at Barton’s Landing Place Apartments when a man was fatally shot during a disturbing confrontation that has left one dead and police investigating a possible self-defense claim. The incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. at the apartment complex located off Cliffdale Road near Bunce Road.

According to the Fayetteville Police Department, officers were dispatched to the scene following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical responders transported the victim to a local hospital, but he later succumbed to his injuries.

Witnesses described a chaotic and alarming scene. The alleged shooter, a man who has not yet been publicly identified, reportedly remained on the premises following the gunfire. Multiple residents saw him pacing and yelling in the parking lot while holding what appeared to be an AR-style rifle. He eventually lay down on the ground and waited for police to arrive. Authorities took him into custody without further incident. Another person who was with him at the time was also detained.

Initial witness accounts and statements made at the scene suggest that the man who fired the weapon claims he acted in self-defense. According to those on site, the man told officers he was ambushed by unknown assailants who had been waiting for him. He alleges that the attackers opened fire on his vehicle, prompting him to return fire in an effort to defend himself. The shooter also stated he did not know any of the individuals involved in the attack.

Authorities have confirmed that at least one other individual believed to be connected to the incident fled the scene and is currently being sought. No details have been released regarding that individual’s identity or role in the altercation.

Residents of the apartment complex expressed shock at the sudden eruption of violence in an otherwise calm area. Several reported hearing a volley of gunshots followed by shouting. Some watched from their windows as the man with the rifle loudly recounted his version of events to bystanders before calmly surrendering to arriving officers.

The Fayetteville Police Department’s Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation. As of now, no charges have been announced, and the identities of those involved have not been released pending further investigation and notification of next of kin. Authorities are also reviewing surveillance footage from the area and conducting interviews to piece together a clearer picture of what transpired.

This incident has sparked community conversations about gun violence, mental health, and personal safety, especially in residential neighborhoods. Barton’s Landing residents are calling for increased security measures and support as they cope with the trauma of witnessing a deadly shooting in broad daylight.

Police are urging anyone with information about the shooting or the identity of the person who fled the scene to contact Fayetteville police or Crime Stoppers. Tips can be submitted anonymously.

As the investigation continues, officials will work to determine whether the shooter’s claims of self-defense hold up under scrutiny and if any criminal charges will follow in what is already a deeply troubling case.
