ROCK HILL, S.C. — A tragic act of violence has left the Rock Hill community in mourning after 17-year-old ZyDerec Massey was shot and killed late Friday night while driving along Finley Road. Authorities are continuing to investigate what led to the deadly shooting that has stunned family, friends, and neighbors alike.

The incident occurred shortly after 10 p.m. on Friday, June 27, near the intersection of Finley Road and McFadden Street, an area typically quiet at night. According to the Rock Hill Police Department, Massey was behind the wheel of a vehicle when gunfire erupted. An unknown suspect opened fire, striking the teenager as he drove.

Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene and transported Massey to Piedmont Medical Center, where medical staff did everything they could to save him. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

The York County Coroner’s Office publicly identified Massey on Saturday morning, confirming that a full autopsy and toxicology screening are scheduled for the upcoming week. Preliminary findings have not yet been disclosed, and results remain pending.

As of Monday morning, no arrests have been made in connection to the shooting. Authorities have not released any details regarding a suspect or possible motive. Investigators are urging anyone with information about the incident—no matter how minor it may seem—to come forward.

ZyDerec Massey’s untimely death has left a deep void among those who knew him. Described by peers as energetic, friendly, and full of promise, his loss has shaken his school community and extended family. Friends and loved ones have begun to share tributes across social media, calling for justice and remembering him as a young man whose life was cut far too short.

“This is an unspeakable tragedy,” said one local resident. “Seventeen is far too young. He should’ve been thinking about graduation, not being laid to rest.”

The Rock Hill Police Department, in conjunction with the York County Coroner’s Office, continues to investigate. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage from surrounding areas and speaking with potential witnesses to piece together the moments leading up to the shooting.

Anyone who may have seen or heard anything unusual around the time of the incident is strongly encouraged to contact the Rock Hill Police Department. Tips can be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers or by calling the department directly.

As the investigation unfolds, the community remains in a state of shock and grief. A memorial is reportedly being planned to honor ZyDerec’s memory and support his family during this unimaginable time. Further updates will be released as more information becomes available.

If you have any information regarding this case, please contact the Rock Hill Police Department or call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
