65-Year-Old Bethel Man Dies in Late-Night Crash on Route 402 in Pike County

Posted on October 17, 2025 by Usainsightreport

A somber tragedy unfolded late this week in Porter Township, Pike County, when a 65-year-old man from Bethel lost his life in a single-vehicle crash along Route 402. The incident occurred just north of Bushkill, in a notoriously winding and wooded stretch of the highway.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police, emergency responders were dispatched to the scene after reports of a vehicle veering off the road and colliding with a tree. Upon arrival, they found Joseph Bylina still inside the severely damaged vehicle. First responders quickly extricated him and rushed him to a nearby hospital. Despite their best efforts, Bylina succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. There were no other occupants or vehicles involved in the crash.

Investigators believe alcohol impairment was a contributing factor in the crash. Preliminary findings suggest Bylina’s vehicle drifted from its lane before striking the tree head-on. The impact caused significant damage to the front of the car, prompting a temporary closure of Route 402 as crews cleared the wreckage. The road was reopened after approximately two hours.

Local residents expressed deep sadness upon hearing the news, describing Route 402 as a narrow and curvy roadway that becomes particularly treacherous at night or during poor weather conditions. Authorities continue to review evidence and data from the scene, promising a thorough investigation.

In the meantime, officials are reminding all drivers to buckle up, stay alert, and practice safe driving habits to help prevent future tragedies on Pennsylvania roads. Troopers extended their condolences to Bylina’s family and friends, calling the accident a sobering reminder of the dangers of impaired driving. They urged motorists to make responsible choices by using designated drivers, arranging alternative transportation, or relying on ride-sharing services if they plan to drink. Even a small amount of alcohol can slow reaction time and impair judgment, especially on winding or poorly lit roads.

This incident serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of responsible driving and the devastating consequences that can result from impaired decisions behind the wheel.
