Sunday evening, August 31, 2025, tragedy struck Mercer County, Ohio, claiming the life of Timothy Betts, a 45-year-old Ada resident whose warmth and kindness touched countless hearts. The fatal crash occurred just before 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. Route 127 and State Route 274, leaving a community in shock and a family grappling with unimaginable grief.
Timothy was riding his 2016 Harley Davidson southbound on U.S. Route 127, a route he likely knew well. In a heartbreaking moment, he attempted to pass several vehicles in a clearly marked no-passing zone. At the same time, Roger Brockman, a 70-year-old Coldwater resident, was driving a 2010 Ford truck southbound and began turning east onto State Route 274. The collision was sudden and devastating. Timothy, who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected from his motorcycle and rushed to Mercer Health in Coldwater. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was pronounced deceased, marking the fourth fatal crash in Mercer County this year.
The Mercer County Sheriff’s Office, led by Sheriff Doug Timmerman, is investigating the incident, with the case set to be reviewed by the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office. Emergency responders, including the Chickasaw Fire Department, St. Henry Squad, and MCERV, worked tirelessly at the scene, a somber reminder of the fragility of life.
