BATTLE CREEK, MI — 20-Year-Old Man Drowns in Goguac Lake Tragedy at Willard Beach

BATTLE CREEK, MI — What was intended to be a tranquil summer Saturday at Willard Beach in Battle Creek turned into a scene of heartbreak and loss when a 20-year-old man tragically drowned in the waters of Goguac Lake. The incident occurred on June 21, 2025, at approximately 5:39 p.m., casting a somber shadow over the popular recreational site and prompting a swift and coordinated response from emergency personnel across multiple local agencies.

A Sudden Turn from Joy to Panic

Witnesses at the scene reported that the young man, whose name has not yet been publicly released pending family notification, had been enjoying the beach alongside friends and other beachgoers on what was otherwise a calm and sunny afternoon. According to early reports from Battle Creek authorities, the man entered the water and, after some time, began to show signs of distress approximately 30 to 40 feet offshore.

Calls to 911 came in around 5:39 p.m., with frantic bystanders alerting dispatchers that a swimmer had disappeared beneath the surface and had not re-emerged.

Rapid Emergency Response

Emergency teams from the Battle Creek Police Department, Battle Creek Fire Department, Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, and other local first responders rushed to the scene. The beach was quickly cleared as rescue efforts began.

Dive teams and marine units arrived with specialized equipment, and multiple divers entered the water to begin a search operation. Lifeguards and witnesses provided officials with the last known location of the swimmer in hopes of guiding their search.

After an exhaustive underwater effort, divers were able to recover the victim’s body at approximately 7:12 p.m. He was pulled from the lake and immediately assessed by paramedics, but tragically, life-saving measures were unsuccessful.

The Calhoun County Medical Examiner’s Office later confirmed the victim’s death and is assisting with the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drowning. Toxicology results and an autopsy are pending.

Community Reeling from the Loss

News of the drowning spread quickly across Battle Creek and the surrounding Calhoun County area. Willard Beach, a long-time favorite for families and young people during the summer months, was closed for the remainder of the day following the incident. Park officials lowered flags to half-staff, and a temporary memorial of flowers and handwritten notes began to grow along the shore.

“It’s heartbreaking,” said one witness who had been swimming nearby. “He was just a kid, enjoying a summer day like the rest of us. No one expects something like this to happen so fast.”

Those who knew the victim have begun sharing condolences and memories on social media, describing him as a kind, energetic, and thoughtful young man with a promising future. Family members, while requesting privacy during this painful time, have thanked the community for their support and the first responders for their efforts.

Safety Concerns and Reflection

The tragedy has also reignited conversations about water safety, swimming access, and emergency preparedness at public beaches.

While Willard Beach is monitored during peak hours and is equipped with warning signs and life-saving equipment, officials urge visitors to remain vigilant while swimming, especially in deeper areas where footing can be unpredictable and currents more difficult to detect.

“We encourage everyone to swim with a buddy, stay within designated swim zones, and respect any warnings from lifeguards or posted signs,” said Battle Creek Fire Chief Brian Sturdivant. “Even strong swimmers can encounter trouble quickly, especially in open water.”

The Battle Creek Parks & Recreation Department announced it will conduct a full review of safety protocols at Willard Beach and consider enhancements such as additional lifeguard staffing, improved signage, and public water safety workshops.

A Life Remembered

Though his time on this earth was far too short, the young man who drowned at Goguac Lake is being remembered with love, admiration, and deep sorrow. His presence, described by friends as “bright and warm like the sun,” leaves a void that will be felt far beyond the sandy shores of Willard Beach.

Candlelight vigils and memorial plans are already underway, with community members organizing a remembrance gathering at the lake in the coming days. Friends and family plan to honor his life, share memories, and offer one another strength during a time of unbearable grief.

As the investigation continues and the community mourns, Battle Creek comes together not only in loss, but in resolve—to ensure no family must endure such tragedy again.

Anyone with additional information about the incident or who may have witnessed the moments leading up to the drowning is urged to contact the Battle Creek Police Department at (269) 781-0911.
