Bullhead City Man Identified in Tragic Suicide During Police Contact

BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. (June 28, 2025) — Authorities in Bullhead City have publicly identified the man who died by suicide during a police encounter earlier this month. According to Sergeant Eddie Espinoza of the Bullhead City Police Department, the deceased has been confirmed as Stephen Gaudio, age 58, a local resident.

The incident occurred on the morning of June 20, when officers were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 800 block of Campbell Road. Officers were attempting to serve an arrest warrant issued by San Bernardino County, California, for Gaudio. The nature of the charges related to the warrant has not been disclosed publicly at this time.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers were able to confirm that Gaudio was present inside one of the apartment units. In accordance with protocol, officers began issuing verbal commands and announcements, requesting that Gaudio exit the residence peacefully and surrender to law enforcement.

Despite their repeated attempts at de-escalation and communication, Gaudio did not respond as expected. A short time later, he appeared on the second-story balcony of the apartment. In a tragic turn of events, Gaudio produced a firearm and fatally shot himself in front of the responding officers.

Paramedics with emergency medical services arrived swiftly after the incident but were unable to revive Gaudio. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. Authorities withheld his identity until his next of kin had been properly notified.

The Bullhead City Police Department expressed condolences to Gaudio’s family and acknowledged the emotional toll such events take on not only loved ones but also the officers involved and the broader community.

“This is a deeply tragic situation,” said Sgt. Espinoza. “While we were attempting to resolve the situation peacefully, the outcome is heartbreaking. Our thoughts are with Mr. Gaudio’s family, and we remind the community of the importance of mental health support, especially during times of crisis.”

The department also confirmed that the officers involved will receive appropriate support services following the traumatic event.
