Cause of Death: Body of Missing Man Found in Watson Lake

Fort Collins, CO – The Fort Collins community is mourning the loss of Larry Baker, an 80-year-old man whose body was tragically discovered at Watson Lake on Sunday, June 22, 2025, following a days-long search after he was reported missing. A beloved figure among family, friends, and neighbors, Larry was known for his kind heart, quiet strength, and deep appreciation for the outdoors.

🎣 A Life Rooted in Nature

Larry was a longtime resident of Fort Collins and a passionate fisherman who found joy in the peace and solitude of Colorado’s wilderness. On Monday morning, June 16, he left home, as he often did, for a quiet day of fishing at Watson Lake—a routine that brought him deep fulfillment. When he didn’t return by that evening, his loved ones grew concerned and notified authorities.

What followed was an intensive, multi-day search effort involving more than 60 personnel from the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office, Poudre Fire Authority, Larimer County Dive Rescue Team, and other partners. Search crews utilized sonar, tracking dogs, drones, and extensive ground and water resources to scour the lake and nearby trails.

🚨 The Discovery

Six days later, on June 22, search teams recovered a body from Watson Lake believed to be Larry Baker. While final confirmation from the Larimer County Coroner’s Office is pending, officials stated the physical description strongly matches that of the missing man. There were no indications of foul play, though the investigation into the exact circumstances of his death remains ongoing.

Watson Lake, which had been temporarily closed during the search, has since reopened to the public.

🌼 A Gentle Soul Remembered

Those who knew Larry speak of a man who radiated humility and compassion. He was described as “the perfect human being”—a devoted friend, a loving family member, and a quiet guardian of nature’s beauty. His calming presence and thoughtful nature left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to cross his path.

Whether he was casting a fishing line into still waters or sharing a cup of coffee with a neighbor, Larry carried himself with grace, humor, and wisdom. His life was a testament to the joy of simple pleasures and the strength found in stillness.

🕯️ Final Arrangements & Remembrance

Funeral and memorial service details will be announced soon by the Baker family in coordination with local authorities. It is expected that the services will reflect Larry’s love for nature and community. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to local conservation efforts or search-and-rescue organizations in his honor.

Anyone who may have been in the Watson Lake area between June 16 and June 18, or who has information that might help investigators, is urged to contact Investigator Napolitano with the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office at (970) 498‑5360.

🌲 A Legacy Among the Pines

While Larry Baker’s passing brings deep sorrow, his legacy lives on in the calm waters he loved, the trails he walked, and the hearts of all who knew him. He leaves behind a lasting reminder to slow down, embrace the quiet moments, and find joy in nature’s embrace.

Rest peacefully, Larry. Your journey has come full circle in the place you cherished most.
