Charlotte, North Carolina – Steven J. Sweda, 50, tragically died in a wrong-way head-on collision on NC 16 early Sunday morning. He was driving south in his 2014 Nissan Altima near the NC 73 intersection when another vehicle traveling the wrong direction struck him directly, killing him instantly.

The Highway Patrol reported that a 2006 Acura RSX, driven by 32-year-old Rashann Jakeem Curmon, was traveling north in the southbound lanes when it collided with Mr. Sweda’s vehicle. The force of the impact caused both vehicles to burst into flames, creating a harrowing scene for emergency responders.

Troopers and firefighters responded quickly, but both adult drivers were pronounced dead. The crash also involved a child riding in the Acura, who was rescued and transported to a nearby hospital. Officials stated that the child’s injuries were not life-threatening, providing a small relief amid the tragedy.

Authorities are investigating how the Acura entered the wrong lane, leading to the fatal head-on collision. The Highway Patrol is reviewing vehicle and driver records, traffic camera footage, and witness accounts to determine contributing factors and prevent future wrong-way crashes.

The crash forced the temporary closure of NC 16 near the NC 73 intersection for approximately three hours. Emergency crews worked carefully to extinguish the flames, remove the wreckage, and conduct a thorough investigation while ensuring safety for nearby motorists.

Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with flames and smoke engulfing both vehicles immediately after the impact. First responders praised bystanders who assisted in securing the child from the burning Acura, a heroic act that may have saved the child’s life.

Wrong-way crashes like this one are rare but often fatal due to the high speeds and direct impact of head-on collisions. Safety experts urge drivers to remain vigilant on highways, especially at night, and to report any wrong-way drivers immediately to authorities.

The families of Steven J. Sweda and Rashann Jakeem Curmon have been notified and are mourning the sudden loss of their loved ones. Friends, coworkers, and the Charlotte community have expressed grief and offered condolences, emphasizing the tragic nature of a preventable accident.

Officials emphasized the importance of safety measures and awareness to reduce the risk of wrong-way collisions. They reminded drivers that adherence to traffic laws, seat belts, and attentive driving can be life-saving for themselves and others sharing the road.

As the investigation continues, authorities are asking anyone with information about the crash to come forward. Troopers are gathering evidence, reviewing camera footage, and interviewing witnesses to ensure a full understanding of how this tragic incident occurred. The community remains in shock over the devastating loss of life.
