Chicago Man Charged with Attempted Murder Following East Garfield Park Shooting

CHICAGO, IL — A Chicago man is facing serious charges after a shooting in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on July 3, 2025, left one person seriously injured. Bernard Butler, 44, was arrested approximately 24 hours after the incident, on July 4, in the 0–100 block of North Hamlin Boulevard, not far from where the shooting took place.

According to Chicago police, Butler has been charged with attempted first-degree murder in connection with the shooting, which occurred in broad daylight. While the victim’s name has not been released, authorities confirm the individual was transported to the hospital with critical injuries. The victim is expected to recover.

Investigators believe the shooting was targeted, though a motive has not yet been confirmed. In addition to attempted murder, Butler may face additional charges related to unlawful use of a firearm and aggravated battery.

Neighborhood Impact

The incident has deeply affected residents in the East Garfield Park community, an area already struggling with the impact of ongoing gun violence. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing emergency responders quickly arrive on the scene.

One resident shared, “It’s heartbreaking and scary. You never expect something like this to happen so close to home, especially during a holiday weekend when people are outside with their families.”

Butler was taken into custody without incident. He remains in jail awaiting a bond hearing scheduled for later this week.

Investigation Continues

Detectives from Area Four are continuing to investigate and are seeking assistance from the public. Anyone who may have seen the shooting or has access to relevant security footage is encouraged to come forward.
