CHICAGO, IL – July 4, 2025 – A horrifying act of violence unfolded on Independence Day in Chicago’s South Side, where 45-year-old Wendy Tolbert allegedly stabbed her three children and set their family home on fire, killing her youngest child, 4-year-old Jordan Wallace, and leaving his older siblings—10-year-old Elijah Wallace and 13-year-old Amaya Wallace—hospitalized in serious condition.
According to authorities, emergency crews responded around midday to reports of a residential fire. When first responders arrived, they found the home fully engulfed in flames and quickly discovered signs of a brutal domestic assault. All three children were pulled from the burning house, but young Jordan was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital, having suffered critical stab wounds in addition to injuries from the fire.
Elijah and Amaya were also stabbed and suffered from smoke inhalation. Both remain under close watch in intensive care as they battle to recover from what officials are calling “an unthinkable and deliberate act of violence.”
Details of the Attack
Investigators say Tolbert locked her children inside the house before igniting the fire. Surveillance and witness reports indicate there were no signs of forced entry or external involvement. It is believed that Tolbert used a kitchen knife to attack her children and then intentionally set multiple fires throughout the home.
Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling addressed the media, calling the case one of the most emotionally devastating in recent memory.
“Wendy Tolbert’s actions have shaken our department and our city to the core,” said Snelling. “What happened to Jordan Wallace and his siblings is both heartbreaking and enraging. This family has been torn apart in a way that defies comprehension.”
Tolbert has been formally charged with first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, and aggravated arson. She is currently being held without bond at the Cook County Jail.
A Community in Shock
Neighbors along South Wood Street are stunned. Many knew Jordan as a playful, curious boy who could often be seen riding his scooter or playing with his older siblings.
“He was always laughing, always full of energy,” said neighbor Monica Reyes, who witnessed firefighters carrying Jordan from the house. “It’s something I’ll never forget. He was just a baby.”
Another neighbor, James Thornton, said, “I didn’t see this coming. I mean, they were quiet, but we never thought something like this could happen right here.”
Remembering Jordan Wallace
Jordan Wallace is being remembered as a bright and affectionate child who loved superheroes and storytime with his big sister, Amaya. Community members are organizing a candlelight vigil at the local park this weekend to honor his short but cherished life.
His siblings, Amaya and Elijah, continue to recover at Lurie Children’s Hospital, where hospital staff have reported that both children are conscious and being monitored closely. Family members have requested privacy as they try to make sense of the unimaginable tragedy.
Legal Proceedings and Next Steps
Wendy Tolbert is scheduled to appear in court later this week. Prosecutors have stated their intent to pursue the most serious penalties available under Illinois law. A psychological evaluation has also been ordered as part of the legal process.
Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive but indicated that mental health evaluations may shed more light on Tolbert’s state of mind at the time of the attack.
As the investigation continues, Chicago is left grieving the loss of 4-year-old Jordan Wallace and praying for the survival and healing of Elijah and Amaya. What should have been a day of celebration turned into one of the darkest in recent memory.
Prayers continue for Elijah and Amaya. Rest in peace, Jordan. May justice be served, and may healing follow.
