CHISHOLM, MN — Community Grieves After Tragic Murder-Suicide Claims Two Lives, Leaves One Injured

CHISHOLM, MN — June 17, 2025 — The close-knit Iron Range community of Chisholm is grappling with a profound tragedy following a devastating shooting that unfolded in the early hours of Tuesday morning. In what authorities now describe as a murder-suicide, two lives were lost and a third individual was left injured. The victims have been identified as 30-year-old Lindsey K. Adams of Chisholm and 34-year-old Leo James Schweiss of Hibbing.

The third person involved, a 25-year-old man also from Hibbing, survived the incident but sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. As of the latest reports, he remains hospitalized in stable condition. His identity has not been released publicly due to privacy concerns and the ongoing nature of the investigation.

According to officials from the Chisholm Police Department and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), the incident occurred inside a residence on the 200 block of 6th Street NW. Officers responded to reports of gunfire around 3:00 a.m. Upon arrival, they found two individuals dead at the scene and the third victim in need of urgent medical attention.

Preliminary findings suggest that the shooting stemmed from a domestic or interpersonal conflict, with Leo Schweiss allegedly shooting both Lindsey Adams and the surviving male before turning the gun on himself. A firearm was recovered at the scene, and investigators are working to piece together the full sequence of events. Authorities say they do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the public.

News of the tragedy has sent shockwaves through Chisholm and the surrounding towns of the Iron Range, where both victims were well known. Friends and family describe Lindsey Adams as a vibrant and kind-hearted woman who worked with local youth and was deeply engaged in her community. She was known for her love of animals, her infectious smile, and her unwavering dedication to those she cared about.

Leo Schweiss, originally from Hibbing, had a complex history. Though described by some who knew him as quiet and hardworking, records indicate he may have faced personal challenges in recent years. The community is now left searching for answers, trying to make sense of how a life that once intertwined with others in meaningful ways could come to such a violent end.

Neighbors recall being jolted awake by the sounds of sirens and flashing lights. “You never think something like this could happen on your street,” said one longtime resident. “It’s heartbreaking — our hearts go out to everyone affected.”

As grief settles over the region, local officials, clergy, and crisis counselors have mobilized to support those reeling from the loss. Candlelight vigils and community gatherings are being planned in Chisholm and Hibbing to remember the lives lost and to provide a space for collective mourning.

St. Louis County authorities are continuing to investigate the incident, reviewing electronic communications, forensic evidence, and witness interviews to understand what led to the violence. They have not yet confirmed a motive but encourage anyone with information to come forward.

As the community mourns, many are calling for increased attention to mental health resources, domestic violence prevention, and support for those navigating relationship crises. While nothing can undo the tragedy of June 17, loved ones hope that the memories of Lindsey Adams and Leo Schweiss — and the pain now felt by the survivor and their families — can serve as a catalyst for healing and change.

A memorial fund is being established to assist with funeral costs and support the surviving victim’s recovery. Further details will be announced by the families in the coming days.
