DC Metropolitan Police Arrest 17-Year-Old in Connection with Fatal Shooting of Anthony White

Posted on May 23, 2025 by Usainsightreport

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has made an arrest in connection with the fatal shooting of 31-year-old Anthony White, who was gunned down in Southeast D.C. earlier this month. Authorities announced that 17-year-old Damari Thomas was arrested on May 22 and has been charged with Second Degree Murder While Armed.

According to MPD officials, officers were dispatched to the 3500 block of Stanton Road SE around 7:41 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, 2024, following multiple reports of gunshots in the area. Upon arrival, police discovered two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel rushed both victims to a nearby hospital, where 31-year-old Anthony White later succumbed to his injuries. The second victim, whose identity has not been released, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover.

The incident shocked the local community, which has been grappling with a rise in gun violence. Residents in the area reported hearing several gunshots and witnessing a chaotic scene as emergency responders arrived. Authorities quickly cordoned off the area to collect evidence and interview potential witnesses.

Following an intensive investigation, which included the review of surveillance footage and community tips, MPD identified Damari Thomas as a suspect in the shooting. Although he is a minor, the severity of the charges led prosecutors to proceed with charging him as an adult. Thomas is now facing one count of Second Degree Murder While Armed, a serious felony offense under D.C. law.

Police have not disclosed a motive for the shooting or whether the parties involved knew each other. However, officials confirmed that the investigation remains active, and additional charges or arrests could follow depending on new evidence.

In a statement, Chief Pamela A. Smith praised the collaborative effort of detectives and the community:

“This arrest represents a significant step forward in our ongoing work to reduce violent crime in the District. Our hearts go out to the family of Anthony White, and we remain committed to ensuring justice is served.”

The tragic death of Anthony White adds to a growing list of homicides in the District this year. Community leaders are calling for more investment in youth outreach, conflict resolution programs, and neighborhood safety initiatives in hopes of curbing further bloodshed.

Anyone with additional information related to this case is urged to contact the Metropolitan Police Department at (202) 727-9099. Anonymous tips may also be submitted to the department’s text tip line by sending a message to 50411.

As the case proceeds through the legal system, the city watches closely, hoping for answers and accountability in the wake of another life lost to gun violence.
