Dr. Marco Joseph Bonta, MD, MBA, FACS, was a revered figure in the medical community of Columbus, Ohio, whose recent passing marks the end of a remarkable era in trauma and general surgery. With a career spanning over four decades, Dr. Bonta’s dedication to patient care, medical education, and leadership has left an indelible impact on countless lives and the broader healthcare landscape.

Early Life and Education

Dr. Bonta’s journey into medicine began with a Bachelor of Science degree from The Ohio State University, followed by earning his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Toledo College of Medicine in 1982. He completed his general surgery residency at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, in 1987, and further specialized with a vascular surgery fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, completed in 1988.

Demonstrating a commitment to continuous learning and leadership, Dr. Bonta pursued and obtained a Master of Business Administration from Franklin University in 2012.


Professional Career and Leadership

Dr. Bonta’s professional tenure was closely associated with OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital, where he served as the Medical Director of Trauma Services. Under his guidance, Riverside Methodist Hospital maintained its status as an American College of Surgeons Level II verified trauma center, recognized as one of the busiest in its category within the United States.

In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Bonta held the position of System Chief of the OhioHealth Trauma Network, overseeing trauma services across multiple facilities. His leadership was instrumental in enhancing trauma care protocols and ensuring the delivery of high-quality surgical services throughout the network.


Educator and Mentor

Beyond his clinical and administrative roles, Dr. Bonta was deeply committed to medical education and mentorship. He actively participated in training the next generation of surgeons, emphasizing the importance of precision, compassion, and continuous improvement. His involvement with the Central Ohio Trauma System (COTS) began in the late 2000s, and by 2015, he had assumed a position on the COTS Board, contributing to regional trauma care advancements.

Dr. Bonta also contributed to medical literature, co-authoring research on topics such as end-of-life decision-making in geriatric trauma patients and innovative training methods for emergency procedures.


Personal Interests and Legacy

Outside the hospital, Dr. Bonta was known for his diverse interests, including target shooting, high-fidelity audio, and engaging with young individuals to inspire and educate. His colleagues often remarked on his ability to connect with people, his unwavering dedication to patient care, and his role as a mentor and leader.

Dr. Bonta’s legacy is characterized by his exceptional contributions to trauma surgery, his commitment to education, and his compassionate approach to patient care. He leaves behind a community of healthcare professionals and patients who have been profoundly influenced by his work and dedication.


Dr. Marco J. Bonta’s passing is a significant loss to the medical community. His life’s work continues to inspire and guide current and future generations of medical professionals.
