EASTCHESTER, BRONX — Deadly Road Rage Incident Claims Life of 27-Year-Old Keino Campbell

EASTCHESTER, BRONX — The Eastchester neighborhood of the Bronx was the scene of a devastating act of violence this weekend, as a confrontation on the road turned deadly, leaving one man dead and a community grappling with shock and grief. Authorities have confirmed that the victim of the fatal shooting was Keino Campbell, a 27-year-old resident of the Van Nest section of the Bronx, whose life was cut short in what investigators are now calling a possible road rage incident.

According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the fatal encounter took place late Saturday evening near the intersection of East 233rd Street and Dyre Avenue, a typically bustling corridor in Eastchester. Just after 9:30 p.m., officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire and a man lying unconscious on the pavement beside a vehicle. Upon arrival, officers found Campbell suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. He was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Witnesses at the scene described a chaotic and terrifying moment. Several reported seeing two vehicles speeding and swerving erratically through traffic before coming to a sudden halt at the intersection. What followed was a verbal confrontation that quickly escalated into violence. One witness told investigators they saw a man exit one of the vehicles, shout at the other driver, and open fire.

The suspect fled the scene before authorities arrived and remains at large as of Sunday evening. NYPD detectives are canvassing the area for surveillance footage and eyewitness testimony to piece together the sequence of events and identify the perpetrator. Preliminary findings suggest the incident was not random and may have stemmed from an aggressive driving dispute that spiraled out of control.

“This appears to be a senseless act of violence triggered by road rage,” said Deputy Chief Kevin Maloney, commanding officer of the Bronx North patrol borough. “We are working tirelessly to bring justice to Keino and his grieving family.”

Keino Campbell was described by loved ones as a bright, hardworking, and kind-hearted young man who lived with his mother in Van Nest and worked as a security guard while pursuing coursework in criminal justice. He had dreams of joining law enforcement — an irony not lost on those now mourning his death at the hands of gun violence.

“He was the kind of person who tried to calm things down, not stir them up,” said family friend Angela Mendez. “Keino had no interest in drama. He just wanted to do his job, take care of his family, and build a better life.”

The Campbell family is now left heartbroken and searching for answers, struggling to understand how a simple evening drive could turn into a fatal confrontation.

“We want whoever did this to be held accountable,” said Keino’s older brother, Darnell. “My brother wasn’t a threat to anyone. He didn’t deserve to die like that, on a street corner, over some nonsense.”

Community leaders and local residents gathered Sunday evening for a candlelight vigil at the corner of East 233rd and Dyre, where emotions ran high as friends and neighbors honored Campbell’s memory and demanded action to curb escalating violence across the borough.

Eastchester has seen a rise in violent incidents in recent months, particularly those linked to disputes that spiral into deadly encounters. NYPD data shows that while overall crime is down in the Bronx compared to last year, incidents involving firearms remain alarmingly frequent.

“This tragedy is a stark reminder of how quickly tempers can escalate and how easily access to a gun can turn a disagreement into a murder,” said City Councilmember Kevin Riley, who represents parts of the Bronx including Eastchester. “We need to invest in community-based violence prevention and conflict resolution programs. No one should lose their life over a traffic dispute.”

As the investigation continues, the NYPD urges anyone with information about the incident or the suspect’s whereabouts to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. A reward may be offered for information leading to an arrest.

Meanwhile, Keino Campbell’s family is preparing for a funeral, and a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist with burial costs and memorial expenses.

This tragic loss has left an indelible scar on the Van Nest and Eastchester communities — a young man with big dreams, taken too soon by an act of senseless violence. In his memory, loved ones vow to keep speaking out and to turn their grief into a push for peace and justice on the streets where he once walked.
