Fallen Heroes: Idaho Fire Chiefs John Morrison and Frank Harwood Identified as Victims in Tragic Shooting

Posted on July 1, 2025 by Usainsightreport

Coeur d’Alene, Idaho – Two beloved leaders of Idaho’s firefighting community have been identified as the victims of a horrific and senseless shooting that occurred earlier this week, sending shockwaves across the state and beyond. The fallen heroes are John Morrison, age 52, Battalion Chief with the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department, and Frank Harwood, age 42, Fire Chief with Kootenai County Fire and Rescue.

The shooting, which has devastated the public safety community, occurred under still-developing circumstances. Both Morrison and Harwood were reportedly targeted while off-duty, and despite efforts by first responders to render aid, both men tragically succumbed to their injuries. Authorities have launched a full-scale investigation into the incident, and while details remain limited, the outpouring of grief and support from the firefighting and law enforcement community has been swift and overwhelming.

Remembering Battalion Chief John Morrison

John Morrison, 52, served with unwavering dedication as a Battalion Chief for the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department. Known for his calm under pressure, strategic leadership, and passion for mentorship, Morrison’s loss has left a deep void in the department he helped shape. Over his decades-long career, he responded to hundreds of emergencies, led with integrity, and earned the respect of every firefighter who worked beside him.

“He was a firefighter’s firefighter,” said one colleague. “He led with strength and humility. John saved lives, shaped careers, and left this department stronger than he found it.”

John is remembered not just for his service in uniform, but for his love of family, his dry humor, and his tireless advocacy for firefighter mental health.

Honoring Chief Frank Harwood

Frank Harwood, 42, was the respected and much-admired Chief of Kootenai County Fire and Rescue. Having risen through the ranks with determination and grit, Harwood was widely praised as a forward-thinking leader with a deep commitment to training, innovation, and community involvement. Under his leadership, Kootenai County Fire and Rescue expanded its public outreach programs and strengthened mutual aid partnerships with neighboring departments.

“Chief Harwood was more than a leader—he was an inspiration,” said a department spokesperson. “He carried the weight of the badge with pride and purpose. We are heartbroken.”

Colleagues say Harwood had a gift for bringing people together and was instrumental in building a fire service culture that emphasized unity, compassion, and excellence.

Community Grieves Unthinkable Loss

As news of the tragedy spread, community members, first responders, and public officials across the region began honoring the fallen with tributes, processions, and flags lowered to half-staff. Fire stations from across the Pacific Northwest have been draping black bunting over their doors in solemn tribute.

A joint memorial service is expected to be announced in the coming days to celebrate the lives and service of Chief Morrison and Chief Harwood. Fire departments nationwide are expressing condolences, with many planning to send honor guards to represent at their funeral services.

Call for Support and Reflection

In the face of immense grief, fire department chaplains and peer support teams have been activated to assist grieving personnel and families. The community is being urged to come together in prayer, support, and remembrance.

Though their lives were cut short, the legacies of John Morrison and Frank Harwood will live on—in every life they touched, every call they answered, and every young firefighter they mentored along the way.

Rest in peace, Chief John Morrison and Chief Frank Harwood. Your service, sacrifice, and courage will never be forgotten.
