Family Grieves Baton Rouge Resident Killed in Early Morning Crash Near Fairgrounds

BATON ROUGE, LA — A devastating incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, July 29, 2025, when Travis Weams, a 48-year-old Baton Rouge resident, was fatally struck by a garbage truck along Airline Highway near the state fairgrounds.

The collision, which took place before dawn, prompted an immediate response from emergency services, including the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, St. George Fire Department, and Louisiana State Police. The southbound lanes of Airline Highway were closed between Industriplex Boulevard and Manchac Park Lane as authorities investigated the scene. The roadway was reopened to traffic around 9 a.m.
