Florida Brothers Lost in Escambia County Fire as Family Struggles to Recover
A devastating fire tore through a family’s mobile home in Escambia County, Florida, early Friday morning, claiming the lives of two young brothers and leaving their surviving family members with severe injuries and no home to return to. The tragedy unfolded at the 5900 block of Flaxman Street in the Grand Oak Mobile Home Park, a quiet neighborhood off 61st Avenue, where residents were jolted awake by the sound of sirens and the glow of flames just after midnight.
Victims and Family Tragedy
The victims have been identified as Vayden Orum, age 9, and his younger brother Rayden Smith, age 7. The boys were asleep inside their family’s single-wide mobile home when the fire began shortly before 1 a.m. Authorities believe they had no warning and little chance to escape as flames rapidly engulfed the small structure. When firefighters from Escambia County Fire Rescue arrived at 12:56 a.m., the home was already completely consumed by flames.
Crews battled the blaze for more than 20 minutes before finally bringing it under control at 1:17 a.m. Once inside, firefighters made the heartbreaking discovery of the two boys’ bodies along with the family’s beloved pet dog, which had remained with them throughout the ordeal.
Three other family members—two adults and one child—managed to escape but suffered serious burns while trying to flee the inferno. Emergency medical personnel rushed all three to nearby hospitals for critical care. Their conditions have not been officially released, but relatives say the injuries are severe.
The mobile home was declared a total loss, leaving the family with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Scorched remains and twisted metal are all that’s left of what was once a lively home filled with children’s laughter.
A Family Shattered
The boys’ grandmother, Lisa Pinegar, who lives in Tennessee, has stepped in to help her grieving daughter and surviving grandchildren. Speaking through tears, Pinegar described the tragedy as “a nightmare that doesn’t end.” She said the family had been staying with her temporarily while they tried to rebuild their lives, emotionally and physically.
Neighbors described Vayden and Rayden as “inseparable brothers” — playful, kind-hearted, and full of energy. Vayden, a fourth grader, loved drawing and playing video games, while Rayden, just starting second grade, was known for his curiosity and bright smile. Both attended Sherwood Elementary School, located less than a mile from their home.
Community and School Response
The Sherwood Elementary School community has been deeply affected by the tragedy. Teachers and classmates remembered the brothers with affection, organizing a candlelight vigil in their honor. School counselors have been made available to students struggling to process the sudden loss of their friends.
Local residents have also begun organizing donation drives to help the family recover. Clothes, toys, and household goods have been collected, with community members expressing their heartbreak and solidarity with the surviving relatives.
Investigation Underway
Officials from the Florida Bureau of Fire, Arson and Explosives Investigations, working alongside the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, are currently investigating the cause of the blaze. As of now, investigators have not determined what sparked the fire. They confirmed that no foul play is suspected at this stage, but a full analysis is ongoing.
Fire officials emphasized the importance of smoke alarms and fire safety, noting that the intensity and speed of the blaze left the family with almost no time to respond.
