Gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.

CLEVELAND, OHIO — A cloud of sorrow now looms over the East Side community following the tragic death of 55-year-old Lavell Scales, who was fatally shot in a double shooting on East 117th Street and Superior Avenue. The incident occurred shortly before 7:00 p.m., shaking residents and sending first responders into action. Two men were struck by gunfire during the violent encounter. While one victim survived with an abdominal wound, Lavell tragically succumbed to a chest wound that proved fatal.

Lavell’s sudden and heartbreaking death has sent shockwaves through the Cleveland community—leaving friends, family, and neighbors struggling to come to terms with the senseless act of violence that took his life. Known for his warm spirit and unwavering loyalty, Lavell was not just another name on the news—he was a son, a father, a brother, and a friend to many.

He was a quiet strength in his neighborhood, a man who believed in looking out for others and making people feel welcome. Whether sharing advice on a front porch step, cracking jokes at local corner stores, or lending a helping hand when needed most, Lavell was the kind of man whose presence was deeply felt and now whose absence feels just as profound.

Those who knew Lavell speak of a hardworking, humble man who carried the weight of life’s challenges with dignity. Despite whatever obstacles came his way, Lavell always found a way to rise and remain grounded in love for his family and his city. To those closest to him, he was a protector, a voice of reason, and someone who showed up—not just in words, but in action.

Lavell’s tragic end is a stark reminder of the rising toll of gun violence in our communities—a growing crisis that steals lives and futures. But to reduce his legacy to the manner of his death would be to overlook the fullness of his life. Lavell Scales mattered. His life had value. And he leaves behind a legacy rooted in love, perseverance, and deep community ties.

As the investigation into the shooting continues, the Cleveland Police Department has urged anyone with information to come forward. Meanwhile, a memorial of candles, handwritten messages, and flowers has begun to grow near the scene—a humble tribute to a life lost far too soon.

Family members are currently finalizing arrangements, and a vigil is expected to take place later this week to honor Lavell’s memory and call for justice and peace. Those who wish to pay respects or support the family during this time are encouraged to stay tuned for further announcements via the official Cleveland Remembrance Page.

As we remember Lavell, may we not only mourn the loss but celebrate the life. May his spirit live on in the laughter of his grandchildren, the wisdom he shared with his children, and the kindness he offered to strangers. May his name never be forgotten.

Rest in eternal peace, Lavell Scales.

You were loved. You are missed. You will never be forgotten.
