HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION UPDATE – FLORENCE, SC

Florence, South Carolina – The Florence Police Department has announced a significant development in a violent crime that shook the community earlier this week. On Friday, June 20, 2025, officers with the department’s Criminal Investigations Division arrested Mehki Christopher Rush in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred along North Irby Street in the early hours of the morning.

Rush is now formally charged with the following serious offenses:

  • Murder
  • Attempted Murder
  • Possession of a Weapon During the Commission of a Violent Crime
  • Breach of Peace, Aggravated in Nature
  • Armed Robbery

Incident Details

The charges stem from an incident that took place around 1:30 a.m. on June 20, 2025. Florence Police officers responded to a distress call reporting two individuals lying unresponsive on the sidewalk along the 500 block of North Irby Street.

When officers arrived, they discovered both individuals had suffered gunshot wounds. First responders immediately provided aid, and both victims were rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Tragically, one of the victims later succumbed to their injuries, while the other continues to fight for their life in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Investigators quickly launched a full-scale homicide investigation, gathering evidence, canvassing the area for witnesses, and analyzing surveillance footage. Their tireless efforts led to the identification and arrest of Mehki Christopher Rush, who is now in custody.
