WATERLOO, IA — The Waterloo Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred late Sunday night, July 6, 2025, resulting in one death and one injury. The deceased has been identified as 20-year-old A’Tarion Key’Won De’Shawn Spates, a resident of Waterloo. His passing is a devastating loss to family, friends, and the community.
At approximately 10:56 p.m., officers and firefighters responded to a report of a shooting at 1641 Mulberry Street. Upon arrival, they found 22-year-old Jasmine Marie Carter suffering from gunshot wounds and immediately began providing medical aid.
While assisting Ms. Carter, officers were directed to 1724 Mulberry Street, where they discovered a second victim, a male, who had also been shot. Tragically, the male victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ms. Carter was transported to a local hospital where she is being treated for injuries considered non-life-threatening. Her condition remains stable.
The Waterloo Police Department continues to actively investigate this case and is seeking any information that may assist in identifying those responsible.
