HORROR IN LOUISVILLE: Mother Charged with Attempted Murder After Brutal Hammer Attack on 6-Year-Old Daughter

LOUISVILLE, KY – A deeply disturbing act of violence has sent shockwaves through the Louisville community after a 40-year-old mother allegedly attacked her 6-year-old daughter with a hammer, leaving the child in critical condition and fighting for her life. The suspect, Zeinab Abdi, is now facing a charge of attempted murder, according to the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD).

The Incident

The attack occurred on Thursday, June 19, shortly before 12:45 p.m., when LMPD officers responded to an urgent 911 call reporting a “trouble run” in the Park Duvalle neighborhood of west Louisville.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers encountered a horrific sight—a 6-year-old girl suffering from severe blunt force trauma to the head, consistent with repeated blows from a heavy object. Emergency responders immediately transported the child to Norton Children’s Hospital, where she underwent emergency treatment. As of Friday morning, the girl remains in critical condition, with her prognosis uncertain.

The Accused: Zeinab Abdi

According to police, Zeinab Abdi, the girl’s biological mother, was arrested at the scene and taken into custody. During her initial interview with detectives, Abdi reportedly admitted to the attack, saying she had “become overly angry” and struck her daughter in the head with a hammer an unknown number of times.

The arrest slip filed by LMPD details chilling admissions. Abdi stated she “frequently becomes extremely angry and has difficulty controlling herself”, and in this case, her anger spiraled into unimaginable violence.

A Brother’s Intervention

Perhaps most heartbreaking of all is the revelation that the attack may have gone even further—if not for the quick and courageous intervention of Abdi’s son, the victim’s sibling. Police documents state that the son physically restrained his mother during the brutal assault in an attempt to save his younger sister’s life.

During a subsequent interview, the boy told officers that as he held his mother back, she pleaded with him:

“Let me finish her.”

These harrowing words, according to the report, were uttered as Abdi struggled to return to the child, intent on continuing the attack.

Police have not released the son’s name or age to protect his identity, but his bravery in such a traumatic situation has been widely recognized by investigators.

Mental Health Concerns and Motive

The motive behind the attack remains under investigation, but Abdi’s statements have raised questions about mental health issues and possible ongoing emotional instability. LMPD has not confirmed whether Abdi has a documented history of mental illness or prior reports of abuse within the household.

However, the case has prompted urgent conversations about the intersections of mental health, child welfare, and domestic safety, particularly when young children are involved.

Charges and Legal Proceedings

Zeinab Abdi is currently charged with Attempted Murder – Domestic Violence and is being held at the Louisville Metro Corrections facility. A bond hearing is expected in the coming days. Prosecutors have not ruled out the possibility of additional charges, including child abuse or assault with a deadly weapon.

Community in Shock

The Park Duvalle neighborhood is reeling from the brutality of the incident, with neighbors and local leaders expressing horror and heartbreak at the news.

“It’s unimaginable,” said one resident who lives near the apartment where the assault occurred. “You just never think something like this could happen so close to home—especially to a child.”

Local child advocacy organizations have begun mobilizing support for the surviving siblings and the broader community, offering trauma counseling and crisis support.
