In Loving Memory of Abigail Hill, 21 — A Bright Light Gone Too Soon
STEVENS COUNTY, WA — The Stevens County community is mourning the tragic and untimely loss of Abigail Hill, a 21-year-old woman whose life was cut short in a devastating vehicle collision on June 15, 2025. The crash, which occurred near Highway 395, just south of Loon Lake, has left her family, friends, and all who knew her grappling with unimaginable grief.
Abigail’s death marks not only the loss of a promising young life but also serves as a somber reminder of the catastrophic consequences of impaired driving. According to Washington State Patrol, the crash was the result of a suspected DUI when another vehicle, attempting to pass on the shoulder, collided head-on with Abigail’s car. Despite first responders’ efforts, Abigail succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
A Life Filled With Passion and Promise
Born and raised in Stevens County, Abigail Hill was known for her kind heart, independent spirit, and infectious laughter. She had recently graduated from Spokane Falls Community College and was preparing to begin her studies in veterinary science, a lifelong dream she had pursued with unwavering dedication. Those closest to her remember her as an animal lover, a loyal friend, and a daughter who brought immeasurable joy to her family.
“Abby was the kind of person who made you feel like everything was going to be okay,” said family friend Linda Morrow. “Her energy, her love for animals, her drive to succeed—she was going to change the world, and it hurts so much that we won’t get to see her do it.”
Abigail was the eldest of three siblings and often stepped into the role of nurturer and mentor, not just to her younger brother and sister, but to many of her peers. Her compassion, humility, and generosity touched countless lives in her 21 years.
The Tragedy on Highway 395
The fatal collision happened around 4:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, according to the Washington State Patrol. Reports indicate that 43-year-old Amber Calicoat, of Clayton, WA, was driving northbound when she attempted to pass another vehicle by driving on the shoulder. In doing so, she sideswiped the vehicle, lost control, and veered into the southbound lanes, striking Abigail’s car head-on.
Two adults in the vehicle Calicoat initially hit were transported to an area hospital with injuries, while a two-year-old passenger in their car was thankfully unharmed. Abigail, driving the southbound vehicle, sustained fatal injuries. Authorities have stated that charges are pending against Calicoat, and an investigation is ongoing.
The crash is being treated as a suspected DUI incident—a heartbreaking revelation that adds yet another layer of sorrow to this already tragic event.
Remembering Abigail
As news of Abigail Hill’s death spread, tributes began pouring in from all corners of the community. A candlelight vigil is being planned at her high school alma mater, where teachers and classmates will gather to share memories and honor her life.
“She was full of life and full of love,” said her high school teacher Mr. Carter. “Her future was bright, and she had so much more to give. This is a loss that ripples far beyond what any of us can comprehend.”
Abigail’s family has requested privacy as they process this unimaginable loss but shared that a public memorial service will be held later this month. Details will be announced in the coming days.
In lieu of flowers, the Hill family asks that donations be made to Kootenai Humane Society, one of Abigail’s favorite organizations, where she volunteered regularly.
A Call for Change
This tragedy is also prompting calls for greater awareness and enforcement of impaired driving laws in the region. Community members, grief-stricken and angry, are urging drivers to think twice before getting behind the wheel under the influence. “This should never have happened,” said one vigil organizer. “We owe it to Abby to make sure it doesn’t happen to anyone else.”
The memory of Abigail Hill will live on in the hearts of all who loved her. Though her time on Earth was far too short, the legacy she leaves—a legacy of compassion, ambition, and radiant kindness—will continue to inspire.
Rest in peace, Abigail. You are forever cherished, forever remembered.
